The Phantom Menace 3D Release

We learned plenty.

KENOBI: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.
VADER: He is here.
TARKIN: Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?
VADER: A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master.
TARKIN: Surely he must be dead by now.
VADER: Don't underestimate the Force.
TARKIN: The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion.

Facts about Vader (1977. edition):

1. He is evil and ruthless.

2. He works for the Empire, but his position in the imperial hierarchy isn't specified, although only one man (Tarkin) appears to outrank him on the Death Star.

3. He used to be flesh and blood, a Jedi, who at some point became a cyborg (More machine than a man). How, when and why? Wasn't specified.

4. He was Kenobi's pupil, a good friend, and an excellent pilot

7. A traitor and mass murderer of his own Jedi brethren.

It takes about 15 seconds to read this list, so how exactly does this qualify as "plenty"?

The amount of time it takes to read this incomplete and erroneous list has nothing to do with what the audience comes to know about the character of Vader in Star Wars.

Let's not forget that two people in this thread have confessed to hating the film because the Internet told them to.
Yeah, I can't believe that continued informed discussion on certain subjects could sway one's opinion.

We need to steadfastly form an initial opinion and stick to it no matter what.

When I did the films were shocking.

Shockingly bad?

Mostly yes. :D Sucker Punch, Red Riding Hood and Harry Potter. HP was pretty awesome but the other two were awful. I didn't have much money for going to the cinema either so it was a bit annoying to see a couple of crap films. Though mostly the intention is going to see friends I haven't seen for a while.

I'm having trouble selling TPM these friends or my boyfriend; everyone is like hell no! I also want to see The Muppets, but people seem to be edging towards The Grey. If that's the group choice I'll stay away and have an early night this time.

That's better!

Darth Maul was supposed to have more lines originally. But I think the silent baddie is cool but only as the muscle since there is nothing else to him.

He might be more of a favorite Character if he didn't have "Darth" at the start of his name. Then nobody would be comparing him to Vader. Screw the Darth stuff. This guy is some ancient warrior skilled in the dark side with body tattoos all over. Calling him Darth takes away some of the mystery and just makes him a henchman of Darth Sidious aka The Emperor.

Lucas would probably call Boba Fett Darth Boba if he could.

Even if he wasn't called Darth, fans would compare him to Vader. That's what would obviously happen to the first character in film besides Vader to use a red lightsaber!:rommie:

Nobody compared the Emperor to Vader as much though. Red saber and Darth title does make them comparable of course.

a good friend, and an excellent pilot

Those were about Anakin, not Vader.
There was no Anakin in 1977. Kenobi was talking about a man who betrayed and murdered Luke's father. Lucas gave us axactly 0 clues about who his father really was, and I'd bet that the "I'm your father" idea didn't come to him till after ANH was already in theatres.

Oh, by all means, you're more than welcome to complete it.

and erroneous list
Please, I've spent more time watching Star Wars as a kid, than an average teenager spends masturbating. What fucking errors are you talking about?

Actually kenobi was talking about "Luke's father", an un named guy. Its only later that he gets the name Anakin, and that we learn Anakin became Vader.

True, it was Luke's father who was Kenobi's good friend and the best pilot in the galaxy. Only thing we really learned from Kenobi about his former pupil is that he betrayed and murdered him.

That effectively cuts my 15-second fact list into 13 seconds. :D

You claimed "a good friend, and an excellent pilot" were facts about Vader ( 1977 edition ). They were not. They were facts about Luke's father, who was a character distinct from Vader in 1977. The fact that Luke's father's name was not known in 1977 is irrelevant.

Wrong. The problem is that you're taking those pieces of information about Luke's father and assuming they were said about Vader.

Seth, I already corrected myself, or did you not notice?

I'm not sure what you're talking about here. I said Lucas told us nothing substantial about Luke's father in ANH, how is that wrong?

All we learned about Luke's father was that he was a Jedi who fought alongside Kenobi in the Clone Wars, that he was a superb pilot, and that he was "betrayed and murdered" by a "young Jedi named Darth Vader".

Lucas gave us axactly 0 clues about who his father really was, and I'd bet that the "I'm your father" idea didn't come to him till after ANH was already in theatres.

Wrong. There were several clues, including:
  • Luke's father was described as the best star pilot in the galaxy, and Darth Vader was a kickass star pilot.
  • Uncle Owen said he was afraid of Luke having too much of his father in him.
  • Obi-wan averted his eyes when he told Luke what happened to his father.
By clues, I of course mean things that might support the idea, but none of which are decisive. And this was shit that we debated back in the early 80's in between TESB and ROTJ, you know before the Internet, so it's not like this is anything new.

Lucas may not have decided that Vader is Luke's father, but Obi-Wan definately didn't tell Luke the whole truth about it. That much was already clear in 1977.

Has anyone else resd the Darth Plagueis novel to prepare for the movie in theaters? I have, and the book goes a long way towards enhancing Episode I's plot. I recommend it. Mind, things do not get heavy until the third section of the novel.
Say what you will about Episode I, it works as a stand-alone as well as the opening salvo in a saga that has enticed millions. Those who constantly and conistently complain about it just do not get it and I feel sorry for them.
