The Outcast

Besides, given Riker's dating record, it's hard to believe that he would fall for someone like Soren. It would have been easier to believe if it was Geordi and Data instead of Worf would have been the one to assist him on the planet. Remember how Data violated regulations when Geordi asked him to, in Interface for example? I don't know, but I would have bought it more readily with Geordi.

I've said the same thing in the past.
It bothers me that Riker was so fast to fall in love and be ready for a serious relationship after years of putting Troi on the back burner. Sure, Riker was promiscuous but he didn't get serious.

Deanne does have cause to be upset. She's been beaten by someone with the fashion sense of a Russian in an American movie made in the 50's and probably doesn't even know how to put make up on. No wonder she switched to formal after a while... That's called giving up.

So your only measure of success is whoring your way across the quadrant?

Slightly related - I'm listening to the audio book for Legends of the Ferengi, and in it Quark points out that one of the Rules of Acquisitions (and this one was on the tv show) is Always have sex with the boss...but female Ferengi are barred from being employers or employees.

If they really wanted to make a statement AND make up for past negligence they should have made it a planet that was prejudiced against homosexuals.
Yeah, but then this would never have been an episode of television in 1992. Which is the point of doing an allegorical science-fiction story in the first place.

They could have just said something like, "this looks similar to how same sex relationships used to be treated on earth over three centuries ago".

To make it seem like 24th century humans have progressed beyond the same history the viewer has.

But they avoided the words, examples or even a small reference to the concept.

They avoided so many direct references to the human condition, that it looked like 24th century humanity lived in its own insulated bubble.

That rule was not featured on the TV show.

But yeah, sleeping your way to the top is definitely a Ferengi thing to do. Sexual preference be damned. :)

I think I recall that rule on the tv show when a Dabo girl went to Sisko to complain that Quark had written it into her employment contract that she had to have sex with him....

but I looked it up on Star Trek Memory Alpha and apparently I'm wrong and that was one created for Legends of the Ferengi. It's a shame because it's kind of funny and sounds like something that could've been on the tv show - not that the gay part would've been intentional.

I do agree, getting back on topic, that it would've been very meaningful if Riker had mentioned in passing that the J'naii's gender discrimination was similar to the homophobia and transphobia of Earth's past, but they were in no way that brave or daring.

I do love Frakes for wanting Soran to be played by a male actor, and that he took the issue seriously at a time when it was pretty common to hear actors playing gay scenes to complain publicly about it or outright de-gay the role, such as what Will Smith did in his gay role.

Homosexual characters were not explicitly EXCLUDED from the Trek universe.
In that TPTB in production made a deliberate decision to not have gay in scripts, in episodes, I'd say you're wrong. It's not like they "forgot" that gays existed, producers (including Roddenberry) made statements concerning the inclusion of gays in the show. Part of how homophobia manifest itself is through both antipathy and aversion.

In a interview with Ron Moore, when ask point blank about gays in Trek, Moore said "There is no answer for it other than people in charge don’t want gay characters in Star Trek, period."

Roddenberry's not depicting gays on the show was a deliberate decision, not an oversight. After Roddenberry left the show, his successors continue the policy by their own choice.

But a person who is homosexual does not appear any different from anyone else, and therefore any number of background characters could easily have been LGBT.
Sorry, but that doesn't work. Television and movies are a presentation, for a character to have been gay they would have to be presented (in some way) as gay, through actions or dialog. If not depicted as gay they would either have no sexual orientation (cardboard cutout) or they default to heterosexual.

If for example it was never said on screen that Deanna Troi was a Betazed, she wouldn't have been one.

:)

The ferengi are also more aroused by clothed females than naked ones, to each their own.
