The Oscars - do you care?

I'm sort of so-so with the Oscars. I am looking forward to seeing Hugh Jackman host it though. If Iron Man is nominated, I sure do hope it wins..it was an awesome movie..I saw it yesterday for the first time. :) And I do care about the Oscars.

Hasn't The Academy (ironically misnamed) in the past voted on movies which weren't seen by all of it's members:wtf:

I remember, was it TITANIC:confused:, being voted Best Picture:confused: by Academy members who hadn't even seen it & admitted as much:wtf:

I remember another time hearing or reading that The Academy doesn't like a film if it's too cerebral.

:wtf: does that mean?

I reject & don't recognize the academy's “authority”:techman:

The academy awards are & have always been a shallow sickening shameless di$play of hypocrisy & rank narcissism.

Who the f**k are these Hollywood hog$ & $wine anyway?

It's been a while since I've been familiar with any of the movies or celebrities. Pop Culture has become so bland that I can't really work up any interest in most of it.

Around this time of year we get a surge of movies that seemed designed to compete for Oscars. They check all of the "Oscar Nomination" boxes.

This usually leads to more genuinely deserving films being ignorned.
I know-- they should delay the awards for a year to give everything time to settle out. But I suppose people don't have the attention span for that....

If they actually focused on Pop Culture and not the Acadamy's version of High Art I might care.
Eh, it's all Pop Culture, no matter what they call themselves. ;)

Nope because they are stupid. There are FAR better movies and actors that deserve Oscars than the ones nominated. The only actor I am hoping wins is Mickey Rourke because I always liked him and he is an underdog.

We all know Heath Ledger will win the "sympathy oscar". I dont think his performance was great as the Joker. As a matter of fact I like Nicolson's Joker better, but the academy will still give him an oscar even though he dont deserve it just because he is dead. If he was alive he wouldnt have a shot.

As for Slumdog Millionaire, I dont see the big deal about this movie. It wasnt very good, but it seems people are all ga ga over it.

I dont plan on wasting my time watching, but the next morning I will just check out the news to see if my boy, Mickey won.

They're just so long!!! So so so long!
I'll watch some of it if I know someone who has worked on a film that's nominated, but... I don 't think I've ever made it through one. Not even Jon Stewart- and I <3 watching him!
Its easier to just check out the results I'm interested in...

It seems more an event to see who's wearing what dress than about film

You say it like it's a bad thing.

This is why I only look at the photos the day after, and skip watching the actual thing. :D

It would be nice to have some idea of who The Academy actually is.

The whole membership list isn't public, but I think their Directors or Governors or whatever they call themselves are publicly listed. Try either wiki or the academy's site. I bet there's a list there, or at least on the net somewhere.

I used to watch the whole thing, now it's kinda morbid but I just watch for the in memorium.

No, I don't particularly care about the Oscars. None of the movies I like will win one. I don't even go to movies in theaters anymore (I will make an exception for Star Trek XI, but of course we all know in advance that IT will not win an Oscar, no matter how good it is). So what's the point?

I never really gave much importance to the Oscars, but I always watched the ceremony - although in previous years in recorded form to weed all the crap out. I did it mostly because of the host, which has been always a comedian. This year however, that's not the case, and so I'll even skip that.

for the first time in a long time i havent seen any of the nominated films.
i had ment to see some of them but life has just gotten in the way.
so i am not as into them as normal.
will watch part to see how jackman does but dont know if will watch the whole thing.

No, I do not care. I am not sure which pics have been nominated for best picture, and I won't have seen them anyway.

I do love to watch the fashion wrap shows that come on cable during the week following.

Sure, I'm interested in and care somewhat about the Oscars, although they can be boring; I like movies (it's interesting to see what they like although I form my own views) and some actors, there are sometimes some decent laughs. Hoping that Hoffman wins for supporting actor and Slumdog Millionaire for picture; Milk, TCCoBB and F/N were pretty disappointing. Not sure how Mike Leigh can get a screenplay nomination when there wasn't one.
Interesting that some of you wish that there were more blockbuster/popular nominees but there's also criticism of Titanic winning when that certainly made money and had fans.

I haven't seen any of the films so no, no I don't care. And I never really did come to think of it. I probably will look at the pictures tomorow of Scarlett Johansson's breasts spilling out of her dress (well, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!).

I've seen a few of the nominated films. I'll tune in, but it'll mostly be background noise as I have work to do this evening.

No interest at all in watching it. I think I find the howls of rage stories/posts after sci-fi/fantasy get shut out yet again more interesting than the actual ceremony :)

To be honest if the credit crunch eliminated half of the egoists/celebutards in Hollywood I might chalk it up to "no pain no gain".

SCREW the Oscars. Maybe I'll check out the list of winners on imdb in the next few days. Maybe. :p
