The Oscars - do you care?

I have never cared about the Oscars because I question the legitimacy of "the Academy" and their authority to hand out these awards.

I don't anymore because the films that deserve the awards never win.

I'd agree with those sentiments. I think there's a lot of ego stroking and back patting among select circles, which means the more deserving films, actors, directors, etc, usually get left by the wayside.

I've found if I see a film that's advertised solely on its number of award nominations, or a big name actor who has a couple of awards behind them, I'm generally not interested in the film. I prefer actual plot and substance, over big names and accolades. And this is why Snakes on a Plane will always beat Crash at the Jongredic Awards :p

I do watch the Oscars, I like seeing the painted on 'oh well done' smiles and strained applause by the losers. :)
I agree with Sagart, Heath should have won for Brokeback Mountain. I loved him in A Knights Tale and although TDK was good it was 30 mins too long and again with utmost respect to Mr Ledger I find it slightly patronising that he is being nominated for all these awards for basically a good make up job by people who seem to regret not appreciating him earlier.
Funnily enough none of the highest paid actors this year have been nominated for acting awards, maybe cos most of their money was for V/Os. So what would you have; the $mils or the little gold coloured statue?

I couldn't give a monkey's. Never watched an entire show, just the clips on the news - that's more than enough.

The Oscars have never interested me. I don't care who wins what, who's wearing what; who arrives with who. I don't care how many miles of red carpet or tv cabelling there are. I don't care how much the diamonds cost or how long the speeches are. I don't care how many tears are shed. I just do not care. Do you?

I ask because tv seems to make it seem as if everyone does care; as if everyone is hanging onto the moment the key gongs are handed out. The Oscars is something that's never really captured my attention and I don't seem to hear folks around me talking about it, either. I sometimes suspect it's just good fodder for daytime tv, particuarly over here in the UK, to have something else to talk about.

Opinions? Are the Oscars a genuinely interesting event for you?

Nope, couldn't care less. My disinterest in such affairs spills over into any of the film award category's. They can all stuff it.

Never miss the Oscars, and now is actually the first time I can sit up and watch it so bro and me are making it so!

I can't stand watching award shows, there is just way too much hype for mediocre movies and overrated actors. It's a complete waste of 3 hours.
The results are nicely recapped in 2 minutes on the radio the next morning, and I suppose if something happens that I absolutely need to see, it'll be on Youtube.

I could care less about the oscars. Rather watch Oscar Meyer:hugegrin:

Who wants to see a bunch of criminally overpaid narcissistic shallow buttmunches rewarding themselves?:brickwall:

Pro-athletes & Hollywood actors/actresses are the most outrageously ridiculously overpaid piles of crap in the universe(s)

For what?

Pro-sportsmen, comparatively speaking, are paupers compared to the Hollywood swine, & generally don't exude the sickeningly insincere phony disdain for greenbacks the Red Carpet Golden-Spoon crowd does.

Reminds me of Springsteen & Ticketmaster. Bruce should've cut hi$ $hare out, let his aficionados attend for FREE.

Bruce has more than enough dough to compen$ate Ticketmaster.

Ticketmaster's the greedy one, not Bruce $pring$teen:lol::guffaw:

That $pring$teen “tangent” aside, Hollywood actor/actress GREED is why movie tix are 10 bucks or more, & studios wa$te ton$ of dough. IE: Paying Nicola$ Cage 30 MILLION DOLLAR$ for 1 craptacular movie:brickwall::wtf:

So, NO, I'll sit out the Crapademy Award$ thank you very little.

Don't much care.

At the least I just want to see Ledger and Slumdog Millionaire win their respective awards.

You can question how "legitimate" they are until the cows come home, but they certainly have the authority. :)

Not really.

I sometimes glance at the red carpet pics the next day to see who dressed well and who embarrassed themselves with some awful taffeta confection, but apart from that I'm not into movies enough to care.

Huh, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I love watching the Oscars, even if I don't always agree with the results. As a movie buff, I wouldn't miss it, and, for better or for worse, I use it as a guide to help me expand my viewing palette. For me, it's an annual television event.

This year I don't. I can't get excited about the best picture nominees and everyone saying this is the best 2008 had to offer when it clearly wasn't. Ok, maybe not this year, but I get a vibe from comments like "200..... wasn't a good year for movies" only based on the 5 pictures nominated. The fact that the academy is so disconnected by the consumers who help these studios make this money is crap and has been for several years now. Granted, these movies are good movies, but you can't tell me that Dark Knight was not the best movie of last year. It made close to a billion dollars globally, got universally praised, and it's co-star has pretty much taken the world by storm and he's dead.

I might watch some of it, but there's the NASCAR race and The Amazing Race to keep me distracted.

I agree. Russell Crowe was great in The Insider and got passed over. The next year he got one for Gladiator, which I thought was an inferior movie and performance. The first TLOTR film gets passed over, because they knew it was a trilogy and they'd give one to the last film. It's politics.

I DO care about who wins the awards, but I don't care one little bit about the ceremonies themselves, and never watch the Oscars. Don't care about star-searching or wardrobe or the red carpet or any of that crap. And I REALLY cannot stand how long and boring those ceremonies are - they just go on and on and on and on and....

But I do care about who wins the awards. Particularly Best Picture (I'm one of those who usually agrees with the Academy), Best Actor/Actress, and Best Supporting Actor/Actress.

However, I'm perfectly happy to read about it online the next morning.

The only place to see what's best is imdb.

Cause only Democracy can show what people really love.

(but you have to check the graph of votes too, sometimes the 'love' vote or the 'hate' vote is extreme. Though they do try at imdb to trim that down with a 'weighted average' formula that takes into account such abnormal voting)

Well, fine, they have the authority. But why? It would be nice to have some idea of who The Academy actually is.
