I have never cared about the Oscars because I question the legitimacy of "the Academy" and their authority to hand out these awards.
I don't anymore because the films that deserve the awards never win.
I'd agree with those sentiments. I think there's a lot of ego stroking and back patting among select circles, which means the more deserving films, actors, directors, etc, usually get left by the wayside.
I've found if I see a film that's advertised solely on its number of award nominations, or a big name actor who has a couple of awards behind them, I'm generally not interested in the film. I prefer actual plot and substance, over big names and accolades. And this is why Snakes on a Plane will always beat Crash at the Jongredic Awards
