The Oscars - do you care?

The Oscars have never interested me. I don't care who wins what, who's wearing what; who arrives with who. I don't care how many miles of red carpet or tv cabelling there are. I don't care how much the diamonds cost or how long the speeches are. I don't care how many tears are shed. I just do not care. Do you?

I ask because tv seems to make it seem as if everyone does care; as if everyone is hanging onto the moment the key gongs are handed out. The Oscars is something that's never really captured my attention and I don't seem to hear folks around me talking about it, either. I sometimes suspect it's just good fodder for daytime tv, particuarly over here in the UK, to have something else to talk about.

Opinions? Are the Oscars a genuinely interesting event for you?

For me? Absolutely. I love the Oscars. It's the one awards show I will watch every year. The Oscars are when everyone shows up and you get some great moments. I love the hosts; Billy Crystal mainly, but Ellen has endeared herself to me as a great Oscar host and I look forward to when she hosts. This year it's Hugh Jackman, so it should be interesting at least.

Wall*E is up for a lot of awards and I want it to win them all. It will have some particular competition with Iron Man & The Dark Knight, but I want Wall*E to sweep them all. Otherwise, between Iron Man & Dark Knight, I'm hoping Iron Man cleans those up.

I have never cared about the Oscars because I question the legitimacy of "the Academy" and their authority to hand out these awards.

I love it enough to sit up through the night to watch them live here in Ireland. Sure, it can be boring, the wrong movies (IMO) get picked too often but you always hope for surprises. With all due respect to Heath Ledger (who should have won for Brokeback Mountain), this year, I'm hoping RDJ wins for Tropic Thunder. I know he won't but still, I hope. I'm looking forward to Hugh Jackman as host; something different. And this year, I actually like all 5 Best Picture noms but I'll be pulling for Benjamin Button. Love that movie (apart from the last 30 seconds or so). Of course, WALL-E should have been a Best Picture nom but don't get me started on that!!

It's been a while since I've been familiar with any of the movies or celebrities. Pop Culture has become so bland that I can't really work up any interest in most of it.

Around this time of year we get a surge of movies that seemed designed to compete for Oscars. They check all of the "Oscar Nomination" boxes.

This usually leads to more genuinely deserving films being ignorned.

When I lived in Canada I would sometimes watch the Oscars but it wasn't "must see TV" for me. I'm always curious to see who has won though.

If they actually focused on Pop Culture and not the Acadamy's version of High Art I might care. This year I saw one movie with one major nomination and only considered seeing a second.

I love watching the Oscars, even when the wrong movies (IMHO) win. I try to see as many of the Best Picture nominees as I can before the show.

One of the main reasons I don't really respect the Oscars is because most of the awards are complete bullshit though.

Best Director category is usually complete bullshit.

I watch, mostly for a sense of tradition. When you've been watching since Bob Hope was host...
(and I agree, Ellen was terrific!)

I may not be too caught up in the nominated movies, but I find it a fun show anyway.

Bingo! It's yet another "Yay Me!" crap awards ceremony.

But just once, when the stars arrive on the red carpet and they're asked "Who are you wearing?", I'd like them to say "Wal-Mart!"
