The Orville season 3 - first look

I've always seen The Orville more of a homage to Trek, carrying the torch for a bright and colourful optimistic look at the future, that does some very interesting commentary on current issues as well as diving into darker plotlines on occasion. In not going the dark dystopia that Trek and so many sci-fi shows are going for right now it's standing out. But that's just me.

I agree with this 100%. I've always felt The Orville is largely inspired by TOS, with a side order of Twilight Zone, and topped of with TNG aesthetics and visuals.
Seemed to me they cribbed from all the Treks. A version of "The Cage", "Measure of a Man", one of the Voyager shuttle crash episodes, "Best of Both Worlds"... you can see which Treks they looked at and said, "one of these"

I agree with you, and I think that's why I like it so much. I find it fun to have it explore topics using humor, and in being able to poke fun at not only itself, but the entire genre. I think that it allows it to explore topics in a way that wouldn't have been able to in TOS and TNG, but still ultimately putting its own spin on things. It may look like Star Trek, but it is its own thing, especially season 2 going forward.

Which is a strength. I don’t think I would be interested in a parody series (parody movie? Go for it!): after a while you can only bring that forward up to a point. Orville has been expanding and establishing lore and has already built an interesting universe.

Like I said, it's not what I want or am looking for. I think the best comedies have characters that you believe in, change, and grow but the more they lean away from "slice of life comedy in space" the less I care.

I may or may not watch 3 if that trend continues.

I don't think any of the Star Trek shows are going for dystopian vibes and that includes when DISCO goes to a dystopia.

One of the more brazen ones involves the asteroid spaceship gone off course with a colony inside. The episode still had some moments and a twist or two, but it was definitely to obvious and to the point where simply swapping an asteroid with a comet wouldn't do much either.

They nicked from Battlestar Galactica too - for which that show was nicking the Bible for inspiration. The better episodes sell their own thing or hide what was nicked to the point nobody's sitting there thinking "Oi, they did this same thing in that movie but that movie did it tons better."

That was a great trailer. It's just oozing with optimism and some cool visual effects. Looking forward to June.

Does anyone know if this is going to be a weekly release or are they bringing it all out at once?
If you're in the US or somewhere it's released on Hulu, then I believe it should be weekly. I think pretty much all of Hulu's originals have always done weekly released.

Agreed. The term has quite lost it's meaning at this point.

Indeed, and this is what has kind of put me off the Orville is the initial presentation as a straight comedy inspired by Trek and more in to a dramatic presentation but still with comedic characters. It's a fine balance to strike and it's one that the Orville has really struggled with. Going in to Season 3 with a fresh eye towards dramatic science fiction vs. comedic homage to Star Trek might help. Maybe.

I've no interest at all in a Trek parody. Galaxy Quest was pretty much the last word on that. There's nothing to add.
