The Orville season 3 - first look

‘Not that similar’… That’s already something different from ‘nothing REMOTELY similar’……. Let’s just agree to disagree
sure whatever. We can close the off-topic now?

This was set up by the previous season of The Orville. We already know to expect space battles and we already know that they can do their stand alone Star Trek episodes in between. Plus it wasn't really about a fight, it was about the traumatised kid whose father figure turned evil.
precisely: it’s an exciting sequence in its own right but it also sets up themes which will be explored in the episode and/or the season: the trauma Marcus went trough and, and I think it will be the main focus, the damage to the relation with his father figure that episode brought about, something that was unfortunately kinda lost during the second half of the second season and now is evidently about to be picked up again.

Also, I find great to see a space battle from the point of view of one of the civilians living onboard, something that sadly TNG never did (the closest they got to it was during the saucer separation scene in generations).

I know..!
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t trying to criticize this preview at all.
I rather like the Orville…..

Not so dark and dingy as well. The show is just better lit than nuTrek

Let's hope so. From what little I've seen in a promotional photo of the bridge and visual clip, "Orville" might be ditching the wider, brighter and more vibrant, and ironically more realistic color palette with the same dingy dirt dump of muted teal/orange that's ubiquitous nowadays despite being trite since 2004 or so... (or, rather, overall. In re-watching season 1, such as "Cupid's Dagger", some f/x long shots of the fleets were the usual teal/orange duopoly (but at least that's just one space battle; the Krill ships are green, Kaylon adornments are red, and in both cases they have a more engaging tone and saturation to them). If nothing else, at least it's harder to associate the previous trite issue of "baddies' weapons are red and goodies' are blue"... but at least those red and blue hues had a decent amount of saturation and didn't look like something crawling in a landfill. But that's the f/x. If interior shots are going to the dank sewer look...

Well, if they don't do more, that's a shame. Glad to hear there's no "definite ending," which is modern television is shorthand for "the massive disappointment that we're all angry about ever since it aired."

But then, we only got three seasons of the original Star Trek. What a forgotten failure that series turned out to be. ;)

It's being reported that the cast was let go when their options expired. However, season 3 was not written with a definite ending.

Unless they're planning on keeping the sets in storage indefinitely it's done. I suppose with so much Star Trek on TV now there's not really much need for Faux Trek.

Piggy backing off what you said

While there are no plans for Season 4 of The Orville, I hear Season 3 is not designed as a definitive ending to the series. The door has been left open for MacFarlane to revisit it with a new installment if/when he wants to do it in the future. In case he decides to do it, the cast will have to be reassembled, and new deals need to be made.

That would have to be a "TNG" type situation/new show. I don't think they'll wait more than 3 months before it needs to be torn down for other shows to take over stage space.
