precisely: it’s an exciting sequence in its own right but it also sets up themes which will be explored in the episode and/or the season: the trauma Marcus went trough and, and I think it will be the main focus, the damage to the relation with his father figure that episode brought about, something that was unfortunately kinda lost during the second half of the second season and now is evidently about to be picked up again.This was set up by the previous season of The Orville. We already know to expect space battles and we already know that they can do their stand alone Star Trek episodes in between. Plus it wasn't really about a fight, it was about the traumatised kid whose father figure turned evil.
Also, I find great to see a space battle from the point of view of one of the civilians living onboard, something that sadly TNG never did (the closest they got to it was during the saucer separation scene in generations).
