Beta-Secratose, or whatever, sounds like a pretty lame deus ex machina...or whatever the term is here.

I like that Ed is important not because he's awesome but because people around him think he could use some help.

So far, it's really good. Love this alt timeline with the crew as renegades. And ep is going all out with the special effects and music.

Okay, the black hole thing was a little weird. If light can't escape, how can the shuttle?

Well supercool about the event horizon, but...no.

The plot turns are too arbitrary and convenient here for my taste.

Limited commercial interruption....every scene. I mean, in one bit, I think they walked through the woods and knocked on a door, then cut to commercial. Been some really short bits here.

Liking the episode, even if it feels like familiar ground

I knew it would be Bortas! Not much of a guess, though -- he was the only one of the central cast we hadn't seen.

There is less science in this episode than in STD. Sad!

Okay, do I have this right for what everybody was doing?

Ed -- had some outpost commands, never got his own ship.
Kelly -- served on ships, but didn't have her own command yet; wasn't on the Orville.
Gordon -- Not clear what he was doing, but wasn't on the Orville because Ed wasn't there to request him.
Claire -- Wasn't on the Orville because in the prime timeline, she felt like Ed needed her.
Bortus, John, Alara, Keyali, Yaphit, and Isaac -- before the war, their lives and careers unfolded mostly the same way as in the prime universe, except that John and Alara had a relationship.

Interesting ... didn't the Kaylon head have red eyes originally? So now we know that the color is dictated by the programming of whatever Kaylon brain is activating the body?
