THE ORVILLE S2, E13: "TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW"

For that matter, Kelly might have her own ship. It's possible they both passed up some opportunities to stay closer together.

That was seven years ago. Not dating Kelly might have moved him to Commander and then Captain earlier.
No, Kelly cheated on Ed a year prior to the first season, which is only two years prior to this episode, confirmed in dialogue in this very episode. Not dating Kelly for the preceding five years before she cheated is not going to accelerate his career that rapidly. If anything it might actually hinder him more, being rejected by a girl he was totally into after the first date could be a blow to his confidence and he wouldn't feel as motivated or as capable as he did while he was married to the girl of his dreams.

Was it stated anywhere in this episode what Ed's rank was when he and Kelly first met?

(Incidentally, if Kelly were in the U.S. Navy, she'd be advancing at just about the fastest possible rate. Promotion to lieutenant commander requires three years of service as a lieutenant, and promotion to commander requires three years as an O-4. Although DoppelKelly's disappointment at realizing she's not a captain in seven years suggests that in the Union fleet it is at least legally possible to advance faster.)

The timeline of seven years really seems too short for all that has happened. That would mean that Ed and Kelly were only together four years from their first date to their separation. This reason for their break-up that Ed spent too much time working seems ridiculous considering they were both officers and they both knew the dedication and time required to be successful. Kelly arguing that Ed wasn't around enough for the first few years of their marriage really weakens her character and makes her seem more needy and selfish than anything else. Furthermore it seems entirely contrary to the character as we have grown to know her.

Plenty of people get into something thinking they can handle it, and then realize they can't. Especially if neither of them had attempted a committed relationship during their military service, it's not unrealistic to think that they both went into it a little overly optimistic and then got smacked in the head by reality.

(Also, just realized my math in my previous post was wrong because I forgot that we're two seasons in.)

Your math still makes sense because we don't know how long Kelly had been a lieutenant prior to meeting Ed.

True. DoppelKelly could already be eligible for promotion, or on the cusp of it, and our Kelly could have just been promoted to full commander at the beginning of the series.

I was thinking that yesterday too. She was no housewive sitting at home waiting for the husband to come home. She had her own work that should occupy her.
Probably it was more them missing each other with both working full hours. Like a couple where both are working different shifts. If one is at home, the other is working.

I really doubt Ed would be Orville's Captain in a timeline where he never dated Kelly. The cheating led him into a depression which impacted his career BUT Kelly is the one who pushed/recommeded him to the Admiral for a chance at a captaincy

So no relationship = no Orville recommendation from her

The Orville was offered to Kelly in the pilot and she turned it down. If she has no relationship with Ed, no guilt about breaking him, then that is not going to happen.

We don't know how the ranks work.

Lieutenant could be the lowest rank.

But it’s also possible that even though she is armed with information about the future, the new decisions she makes don’t pan out and her life still doesn’t end up the way she wanted.

Maybe Ed excels and is still Captain of the Orville without her help and he does a favor for Kelly (who is stuck as a junior officer) by making her the first officer.

No, nothing's stated about what his rank was at the time. Assuming Ed's older than Kelly (in real life MacFarlane is ten years older than Palicki) than Ed was either a Lieutenant himself, or a Lt. Commander.

The officer ranks in the Union Fleet seem to match the US Navy's, though there doesn't appear to be a Lieutenant JG in the Union.
