THE ORVILLE, S2 E12: "SANCTUARY"

Did anybody catch that in the new trailer?

Voiceover: "With only three episodes remaining this season [...]"

Maybe word behind the scenes is it's going to be renewed, so they made that confident statement.
FOX has a habit of doing things like that. They were doing that for TERRA NOVA too (IE Saying 'Season Finale' then bang - cancelled.)

I caught that, and frankly discounted it. I figure that it will cause a lot of talk among Orvillians for a week or two, but probably doesn't mean anything about renewal, any more than the inclusion of a few Orville shots in the New Fox trailer released this week does.*

Truth to tell, I don't expect a renewal.

  • The show is very expensive and much more complex as a production than most of Fox's other shows, and the ratings are middling at best for Fox.
  • There are too many other Fox shows in stronger shape ratings-wise, and the network is giving a couple of its current scripted hours over to the WWE next season.
  • Yes, Fox has an ownership stake in The Orville, but that's also true of every other potential returning show.
  • It's tempting to say "Oh, but the California tax break!" but honestly only the network and studio accountants know how that weights the equation, so it's close to wishful thinking to factor it in right now.
  • Also seductive: "Fox loves MacFarlane and wants to keep him happy - he has clout!" Which is why Fox is still running Dads, The Winner, Bordertown, The Cleveland Show...

It's customary at this point to add "I'd love to be proven wrong," but I think we know that goes without saying. ;)

*The sizzle reel also contains a couple of moments from Gotham, which is ending in a couple of weeks. Putting together a promotional piece, you work with what you have that people will recognize.

One additional note: as of a couple of days ago - near as I can parse the details of the Disney acquisition of Fox - The Orville and other TV shows running on Fox are no longer owned by the same corporation as the Fox Network.

20th Century Fox Television, which produces shows like The Orville, is owned by Disney.

The Fox Broadcasting Company is owned by the Fox Corporation, an independent company in which the Murdochs hold a 39% share. It was spun off in the Disney/Fox merger and is not owned by Disney.

So...it looks like the Fox Network no longer sees any monies from the shows produced for it by 20th Century Fox Television, beyond the advertising minutes they can sell - no license fees, streaming money, merchandising money, syndication money etc. If true that further changes the financial equation, and not in The Orville's favor.
But Fox isn't going to be producing any of their own scripted series (or movies), and they're going to need something to show, so that doesn't really mean to much for it's chances either way.
It's hardly a confident statement, just a factual one. Regardless if it's renewed or cancelled, there's only three episodes left of the season and a renewal or cancellation isn't going to change that. So rather than say "three remaining episodes of the series" and end up with egg on their face if a renewal is announced, they'll just say "three remaining episodes this season" and that way, they're right either way.
I've seen shows that are already canceled still talk about last X episodes of the season, and season finales.

Well, it does come down to business, doesn't it? I'm sure the Browncoats feel Firefly should have had many more seasons and Serenity should have had a sequel, but ratings and box office results don't support a decision to do so, do they?

Oh, indeed. I've even seen DVD releases of cancelled shows identified as "Season 1" despite the fact that there won't be further ones.

Okay, let's indulge in some meaningless reading of tea leaves...

So Variety reported yesterday that Fox has renewed The Resident and 9-1-1 (both of which have better live ratings than The Orville).

And then this exchange took place on Twitter between a poster and Orville's associate producer/editor Tom Costantino (he had tweeted the Variety article):

Ha not if you want me to be in the street before I can go back in space.

IDK - unfortunately it doesn't look promising as the coveted 18-49 demo (which I'm already out of myself ;)) keeps dropping although actual 'number of viewers has stabilized over the last couple episodes:

How else would you say it? It's a fact. The only other real options would be saying the same damn thing........."three more episodes of season 2"......what would you have them say? It's not confident......it is just a fact. Reading way too much into a simple voice over.

Well, that's a false argument; it didn't need to be said at all. It ads nothing to the promo. It's no longer 1990, people are going online to see how many episodes are left and if it's been renewed or not.

By the way, I see the show has been moved, for the final three, to Monday's. I know Friday is considered a kiss-of-death day to move to (though there are exceptions to the rule), but what about Monday?

That kind of time slot manipulation this late in the season isn't a good sign. Looks like they're just burning the last three off, and the show is probably done at Fox.

If it gets cancelled after 2 seasons then a letter writing campaign may save it. :)

But these days with all the streaming services looking for new content, if a show has a loyal set of viewers it has a much better chance of finding a new home compared to when Star Trek:TOS or even Enterptise got cancelled.

I hope Orville gets renewed on Fox. If not lets hope Netflix, Amazon , Apple (which just announced its stream service) or Disney (who owns the series now) come to rescue.

If Disney owns the series outright, then it is very possible we will see it on Hulu next year. Star Trek seems to be the only property they don't have, so they might want to keep the Orville flying.
