Let's not forget that Penny Johnson guest starred on TNG Homeward!! She experienced this from the other side!
Did Alara insinuate that she is interested in MacFarlane's character?
I don't think it was really meant to be a funny gag this time around, more of a shared inside joke, a nice way to show a bond and history between the characters. Not sure how I feel about the "jar of pickles" line between the Captain and Alara possibly becoming a running gag, because it fell flat this time. I half expected there to be a meta-commentary from her about how he had already used that joke before, but it didn't happen. It was nice though to see how Alara appreciates that the captain admires her strength and skills without being intimated by them like many of her other male crewmembers and friends. Some good character building there.
What's the drop off from Gotham? Part of me thinks Orville should be 8:00 pm show.Liked this 4th episode, especially Ed/Kelly's exchanges/chemistry. They share the same humor and the most important, in a relationship, no matter it is on a romantic (I guess they were probably best friends before they dated -> even if their mariage turned sweet and sour, I bet they will end together at the end!) or professional level, they understand each other/ show mutual respect*).
Hey, what do you want, I'm an eternal romantic but I don't like forced relationships like Troi/Riker, Seven/Chakotay, Dax/Wolf...
(* I read that McFarlane & Palicki were friend in life and this can be seen!)
Liam Neeson in this episode, Charlize Theron in the next... not bad at all but I fear that the adventure stops too quickly if the ratings keep falling (cf https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/the-orville-season-one-ratings/ --> for 09/28/2017 : 3.730 mil for a demo of 1.10)... unless Fox decides to continue the adventure through a s2 (fingers crossed!) to give to Seth McFarlane and his show, a chance to improve ... and amortize the costs/expenses.

It would make sense given the tone of the shows to have Orville at 8 and Gotham at 9. Orville held on to its previous week despite going up against Will and Grace. Of course, Gotham's rating fell as everyone waited to see if the NFL players would stand or kneel. What's the drop off from Gotham? Part of me thinks Orville should be 8:00 pm show.
I actually saw it more as the classic Trek trope of, "Our landing party hasn't contacted us for a while, but a ship has just sent a distress call and we need to render assistance" sort of thing. Actually, I found it more refreshing that it WAS a ship in distress and not a setup to get Orville away from there.Another fun episode, yeah it's heavily borrowing from classic Sci-Fi playbook (and Star Trek in particular), but you can't really see that sort of stuff on TV these days so I find it both refreshing and comfortable at the same time. Hope it gets picked up for more episodes/another season.
Minor gripe, I thought the whole "we need to go away for a bit to shoot some Krill" thing was superfluous and too (in)convenient.
It looked like it had more viewers than Gotham, and FOX has a history of renewing absolutely horrible shows with less viewership/share than Orville has been getting.I hope they don't cancel this. Fox may be too big of a network for it. Though if they move it to cable I won't be able to see it anyway. What are the odds of both this and Discovery getting canceled? I'll bet it's 50% or close to.
Also, "BOOM, BITCH!" had my 13 year old daughter gasping for air from laughing!![]()
What was funnier was that he kept going with it, and I don't fault him after getting that maneuver in and hitting them perfectly!Unless there are continuous audience drops, Orville will get renewed, especially if Macfarlane can keep getting famous guest stars.
That was hilarious![]()

You have a point. I think that it was put in to meet the classic Trek style of moment, but you explain the alternative well. It could have been done without the diversion as well, and keep the focus on the main situation. It really wasn't needed though, they could have just had the away team accidentally lock themselves in till they reached the bridge at the end to unlock the door. And the Orville going away and fighting the Krill could have been replaced by scenes of them trying and (humorously) failing to get in. Something like that would have fit the episode better than a completely unrelated diversion...
