The only reasons why I regret the story being taken from Rand are that having their emotions hollowed out by the machine could have been a good way to kill off the Kirk/Rand frisson and it would have been cool to have Rand kill someone who isn't on her own team.That and her mini-skirt didn't cover her butt.
Interesting discussion as I just watched DOM, CM, and OA (or, O:A!!!!!) the other night to celebrate Star Trek Day. 
This was very unusual for me; I don't know that I've ever watched three S1 eps in a session before without some S2 or S3 thrown in, well, at least not since I did my last full rewatch, which was a while back.
I actually enjoyed DOM the most of the three (just barely; all were fun). Marianna Hill was fantastic. She was extremely enigmatic and alluring, to be sure, but her chemistry with Shatner was excellent and she was highly convincing as a professional, even though I wish they'd given her a tricorder. She really put the episode over the top from good to very good. I always thought Kirk had the best chemistry with Deela and Odona (and maybe Lenore K. pre-freakout and perhaps Kelinda as well), but the Kirk-Noel pairing is up there for sure. They should have had her back at least once.

Given that none of Mulhall's dialogue has any scientific basis apart from a brief discussion of psychology, it could easily have been Noel quite apart from And the Children Shall Lead and Whom Gods Destroy. Agreed but what's the meaning of the references to ATCSL and WGD? You mean Noel's skill set would have worked in those eps?
I just had another stray thought; did Noel in any way influence the creation of Deanna Troi?
Only in that the Trek writers were obsessed with women being involved in psychology and psychiatry: Dehner, Noel, Jones, Chapel (Phase II Bible), Ilia.

Good catch. I just read the script and there is exactly one reference to her being a psychologist (a sarcastic one from Marvick). No one else ever explains what she's a doctor of. Having not seen ITITNB in a while - and thanks, it's now next up

They did give her a modesty piece for the front of it, though, for the duct-crawling shots.
I'm not worshipful of the Noel character, but Hill was a standout among crew member performances; competent, confident and not eager, and good humored.
Now you're just being insulting. No, it's not just because of those reasons. As Zap and Phaser Two describe, Helen has a lot of great qualities. She is physically to my liking, yes, but she has a great personality too. She is fun loving, but when it comes time to get down to business she does so. Unlike other females in TOS, she actually gets to do something, and she saves the day, taking out the force field allowing Spock to beam down.
I don't know how it was in the 60's, but today a great majority of therapists are women, so I guess the trend continues into the 23rd century.
I guess it depends where you live. Where I live male therapists are on the rise and actively searched for, especially int he field of men's mental health.
Ilia was supposed to be a counselor? In the phase II publicity shots she's wearing operations gold...
Yeah I think the intention was for her to unofficially fill that role.
She was a navigator. But as a Deltan she was supposed to have some level of telepathic ability.

Yes, but the conversation was about mental health in Star Trek being stereotyped as a female profession with Ilia used as one of the examples, despite her not being a mental health professional. Not whether her character influenced Troi's creation.
Ilia was mentioned in a reply to the question "(D)id Noel in any way influence the creation of Deanna Troi?" As I said, the psychic/telepathic angle was the only reason I could come up with for mentioning Ilia in that context.
