And here I thought it was rough a few months ago...

What in the world could cause a "war" like THAT!?

Lisa's war against TNZ. TNZ was populated by a, shale we say hard core nutcase, group back then. And TK was at it's height of activity and hostility as well.

Every time we have a sort of "History of TBBS" thread, I have to bring up...

SUMMER OF SLOTH!

And, of course, I have to mention the lost but not forgotten Reno Floyd. Best. Poster. Ever.

Also the entire "Neutered Zone" incident, when Lisa made her changes to TNZ, including the lead up, the leaked BR threads, and the two or three threads in tnz about it. That was a real shitstorm.

And trust me, you have no idea the half of it unless you were a mod while all that was going on. Our accouts were hacked, the board was hacked and/or attacked, our personal information (or what they thought was accurate, anyway) was collected and posted on the internet, one or two of us had our identities, IM accounts, email accounts, etc stolen or hijacked...it was a horrible time to be on staff on this board.

That 2 -3 month period was the only time in the 6 1/2 years time I've been a mod that I felt 'under siege'. And I think that pretty much all the mods at that time felt that way.

Because we WERE under siege. :(

My guess is a few mods had the same password on everything? That's the first no-no in being a mod/admin (and the internet in general). Never, ever use the same password for the board that you use for anything else. I always expect a board to be hacked or accounts in some way compromised so the password I use on message boards is completely unique to them. I avoid reusing passwords on anything that's sensitive or open to that kind of exploit.

I vaguely remember hearing about it way back when it happened. Glad I was no longer part of the staff by then and out of the way, so to speak.

I heard a few mentions at the time of a handful of people starting their own Troll Kingdom, but I didn't realise it got serious enough to reach the stage of hacking mods, etc... Good riddance, in that case. Sounds like the first world war of the Trek bbs or something!

No...I don't think it was 'the same password on everything' sort of deal.

But I do think that most of the people had a fairly short (around the minimum # of characters) password that was a combination of letters and numbers...and the numbers spelled out a real word.

I think the hackers had a program that they ran on accounts, trying different combinations until they hit on something.

After that, all the people on staff at that time got random password generators. Can't speak for the rest, but for a few years there I was running a random alpha-numeric password of 18 or 19 characters and changing it often.

Yeah...they could run their little program on me, but it would take them a long while to crack me. :p

Still, it sucked to have to keep track of 18 or 19 character gibberish passwords.....

In fact, speaking of passwords....time to make the donuts.

IIRC, the problem stemmed from email accounts being hacked. Aparently, some mods email accounts security questions were easily answered. One was "What's you're fav TV show" I think.

Once they were in that account they were able to jump around to the other mods accounts via the info mined from the emails between that one mod and others...

Amen to that.

Partsking and I put an end to that (and the badger) nonsense.

Praise to Mallory for (largely) putting down the Great Sloth Rebellion of 2003. You're name will go down in the history books alongside Farragut, Nimitz and Surak.

I don't recall it being quite that bad when I was on staff...must've happened after I left. I do know that TK and such was around when I was on, though.

I used to post here under the name insert_name_here mostly for Voyager and misc then BSG. I survived many Voyager shipper wars, that was both weird and eye opening.

I'm mostly on LJ and Facebook now.

Wow, nice to see you back. Why did you leave?

I was sick of seeing so many sexist posts on the board I reached my threshold on that kind of behaviour. I also got distracted by another board and I'm not really interested in seeing any more new trek. I saw the new movie and really didn't like it. Plus real life keeps me pretty busy these days.
