The Official: What do Niners Feel About Enterprise

Although I did not watch a lot of the series, I must give ENT an F.

Character growth and development was a product of dialog, not demonstration (e.g. there was dialog about Archer being a great diplomat, but he let his dog run roughshod over the cultural taboos of a society).

Despite all that, I won't attack anyone for liking what I found to be a horrible series. What you like is what you like. I'm sure that I like some stuff that other people think is crap. In fact, I probably pride myself on that!

Same here, about not attacking anyone. There's plenty of people who like things I hate and hate things I like.

For my two cents, character growth and development was pretty good, not great, but good. Archer started the series harboring a deep, deep resentment of the Vulcans. After experiencing that they weren't all arrogant jerks (especially his relationships with T'Pol and T'Pau), he came to have a much more warm and open opinion about them. And I like how they showed him letting Porthos run crazy. It showed how his diplomatic skills evolved. He didn't just start off as a great diplomat; he learned on the job. T'Pol definitely changed, from someone who consistently toed the government line to one willing to help overthrow the High Command.

Granted, the growth wasn't as in depth and fleshed out as DS9 characters, but it was most definitely more developed than TNG characters. With the exception of Worf, did any of them change?

Anyways, that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

ENT is not my cup of tea.

I watched all of season 1 and give it about a "C-". Nothing great, but not outright terrible yet. I watched about half of season 2 and just could not stay interested. Watching that show became a chore, and I have enough chores in life without making a TV show one of them. Season 2 (as far as I watched of it) gets an "F" from me.

Didn't watch the last half of season 2 or season 3. And I didn't watch season 4 until B&B finally called it quits and gave someone else a chance to run the show. I began watching again for that and it was better than I remembered....but still not fantastic. I give the last half of season 4 a "B", with the exception of the series finale, which gets a solid "F-----" because they turned it into a TNG episode with buttinski Frakes and Sirtus, who, boring and tired as they were, were not above stealing the ENT cast's final episode from them and turning it into another boring 'all about TNG-fest". YAWN! That disaster on a dish final episode was the last straw for me and gave me a permanent disinterest in all things ENT.

As for the characters, in the end I think I only liked two characters on the show - Trip (who they killed off in the stupidest way possible) and Porthos, who was a dog. A few of the characters (Hoshi the whiner immediately springs to mind) I NEVER liked....and the rest of them I lost interest in over the course of the series as they got more and more annoying.

I also don't get why so many people were so upset that Trip died. Jadzia was one of my favorite characters on DS9 but I didn't go around proclaiming: Jadzia. Not. Dead.:wtf:
It's more the way he was killed off than that he was. I was hardly a Trip fan, but even I knew that was a ridiculously awful way to kill a main character off.

Agreed. Jadiza's death was well-written and well-executed (no pun intended). She died trying to apprehend a war criminal. It also further defined the characters of Dukat and Sisko. Also, it didn't seem like something that the writers just slapped on at the last minute.

Trip's death, on the other hand, was the opposite. It was pointless. Yar's death had more meaning in that it showed that death can come at a moment's notice. Trip just decides, at the drop of a hat, that the first trick out of the bag should be to commit suicide. Huh? On top of that, we never got to see anybody really mourn his death, like we did with Jadiza.

Finally, Ezri was better anyway.

Another Ezri fan!:D

As for ENT, I watched a fair chunk of S1 on Sci-fi Channel, and I don't feel inclined to watch any more of it.

The only character I even care a little about is Travis. And his lack of screentime (apparently) never gets any better, so...so much for that. It felt like "TNG, only not". And unlike VOY, I didn't like ANYONE that got any sufficient amount of screentime. And Bakula was one of the worst possible picks for a starship captain. I also saw In a Mirror, Darkly but like all mirror universe episodes, it's utter garbage if you take it as anything more than satire, despite the serious tone.

I've seen the majority of season 1, a fair bit of season 2 and the first episode of season 3 and unfortunately it largely bores me. There are a couple of episodes I really like and some others that are decent, but mostly I find the stories uninspiring and the crew uninteresting. A lot of people say it only really got good in season 3, which I'll keep an open mind about, but I don't think anyone could be accused of not giving it a chance if they gave up after the first two seasons. I like Voyager better.

Well, when I first saw the pilot I hated it - but I decided to give it another chance recently and liked it much better - so I am watching it now... but I am only halfway through season 1. All I can say right now is, it is not really that bad as I first thought (and as people say)... I will give you an opinion after I finish.

Where is apenpaap to defend ENT? :)

I can provide a numerical value in around three months, but my impressions right now are...

Season 1: Average. Voyager done a little better.
Season 2: A poor man's season 1, big improvement for the final five episodes.
Season 3: The show finally found a direction, too many filler episodes but it was still a solid season.
Season 4: What Enterprise should have been from the start, a bit too fanwankish, budget cuts made the production seem cheap.

It's an okay show, possibly better than Voyager. It nearly lost me during the long run of uninspiring episodes in season 2, but season 3 grabbed me in a way which no Trek had since the end of DS9. Season 4 wasn't as good, but they were laying the foundation for what could have been a magnificent seasons 5-7.

Like the Earth/Romulan War

Enterprise is unique because there were actually 3 different show.

Season 1-2: Poor writing, major continuity violations, complete lack of direction.

Season 3: Didn't feel like the Star Trek universe at all. Complete assassination of the character of T'Pol and virtual abandonment of the one character that was interesting and well-acted (Phlox). I hated season 3.

Season 4: Excellent. Not only was the over-all quality light-years ahead of the previous seasons but it told the type of stories that belonged in a prequel. If only Enterprise had been this from the beginning. :(

Season One and Two lost me completely, I didn't care for it. Halfway through Season 3 I was about to just junk the series and move on, and then a wonderful thing happened, it got good. Not just good, but very good. The second half of Season 3 was fun to watch. Season 4? Oh man, there is only one ENT season I am buying and that is Season 4. What a great season, and the show just started getting better, acting more like it's original purpose, it gained focus and momentum. I think if there would have been a Season 5, they would have gathered more fans, but it was too late. The only problem I have with Season 4 is TATV. That whole finale can be beamed out into space, wide dispersal.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The possiblities were amazing! Things like the first steps of the Coalition of Planets, the further development of good-will and trust between Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites, and, of course, the Earth-Romulan War would have been wonderful!

Yeah, in the first few seasons, I didn't care if the show lived or died. However, once I started seeing good things happen, I wanted the show to have a chance to do great.

Not to mention I'm pretty sure they were considering making Shran a regular.

I liked ENT and wished the show had done better. I've said before that ENT was what got me excited about Trek again. I think the main problem was they were trying to do something new, but used the same old formula. Star Trek XI succeeded in doing what ENT generally failed at: going younger and making Trek more attractive to new audiences. If season one had been more like season four, I think the show might have run a full seven seasons.

I'm among the few who liked season 1 and 2 better than season 3 and 4. I disliked the xindi storyline and how Archer became more like George W Bush (with airlock tactics and such) than a Starfleet Captain. There were things I liked about the show as well but it's been a long time since I watched Enterprise and I can't remember anything specific.

I wouldn't have done the show at all. I don't like prequels, and Trek is so inconsistent and contradictory over its past that any effort to make a show in that time period would have been (and was) futile.

Plus, "Birth of the Federation" would have just been seen as a Babylon 5 Knock-Off.

Enterprise was okay ,I just bought season one for a christmas present for a relative who enjoys Star Trek .
