I'm anxious for the 24 minute documentary on the making of the bluray It'll show how they made the decision to recomposite instead of re-doing the FX wholesale.
Having the elements to recomposite (unlike TOS) probably helped. Especially since they had to reconform the episodes anyways.

If they had final cuts on film (like TOS), or if they had lost the source materials (like TOS), I have no doubt that TNG would have received the same treatment as TOS.

I think that's a given, and something not taken into consideration at all by the "purists".

SFX has their review. They're pretty harsh on the season itself, but still seemed to love the set.

http://www.sfx.co.uk/2012/07/09/star-trek-the-next-generation-season-one-review/

What a lame review is that? They have one sentence of comment on the quality of the remastering. The rest is just random gripping about how bad the first season was. I hope the person who wrote this is not a professional journalist. My 6 year old niece could do a better job.
It's not a review of the remastering process, it's a review of the entire product, the quality of the episodes, the extras and everything. That may not be what you want to read about, but it doesn't make it a bad review. It's pretty succinct, accurate and well-written, and rather beyond the abilities of your average six-year-old.

Huh, I didn't know that they might have lost footage from Outrageous Okona.

Yes, just some film of the original Erstwhile model - so a CGI replacement was worked on for some time. But it sounds like they may have tracked down the original film now!

I can only imagine how nervous the team must get when they think a piece of film (perhaps even a major piece) is missing, so they have to hunt around for it...

Thankfully it seems they have some wonderfully dedicated people hunting for film (Sarah and Kiki). And the results speak for themselves - just 2 seconds missing from all of Season 1!

Mike: ... When the Blu-Ray project started up, we emailed Melinda and said ‘Hey, is there any chance you still have that VHS tape?’ And she was so kind. She just mailed it back to us – that’s why we have it.

And everyone’s trying their darndest to make it happen. It’s kind of a crapshoot, but everybody is very enthusiastic that the process is going forward. Right now we can’t tell you if it’s going to be a happy ending, but everybody is very excited about the possibility and trying to make it happen.
Very interesting! So it does indeed appear that they are attempting to reconstruct the longer cut in HD! Otherwise, they would just digitize the VHS tape and be done with it. There'd be none of this talk about a "process going forward" or "trying their darndest" or it being a "crapshoot."

Excellent. Makes sense too, as it adds more value to the Season Two set, which is 4 episodes shorter than every other season. And they've done it before, including the alternate cut of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" on the Season Three TOS set. Of course, that was easier... they just had to scan a complete print they found.

Great interview, FrontierTrek!

So I assume Snodgrass's VHS tape is being used as a guide for re-editing the episode?

Unfortunately it sounds like this was just a special, one-time thing they put together for the sake of the writer.

If they can't reconstruct it in HD they should just put the crappy old VHS copy on the discs, it's an extra, it doesn't have to look perfect, I'm pretty sure every fan would love to see it no matter what it looks like.

This.

That's what it sounds like. It should at least have burnt-in timecode on it.

It may actually be the only episode that ran this long in first cut form, with this many extra scenes filmed. Not sure.

This extended cut of the episode is an added bonus, but I'm just hoping that, since they're going back to the original film, they'll find deleted scenes they can add as extras.

By the way, if you were wondering what the Remmick mother creature from "Conspiracy" is going to look like in HD, here you go, courtesy of Robert Meyer Burnett's Twitter page:

Yes also on the
Disc 4 contains audio commentary for "Yesterday's Enterprise" by David Carson .
on Star Trek: Fan Collective - Alternate Realities

DVD.

I think audio commentaries would add a great deal to the Blu-ray special features for fans to double dip. seasons 2-7 should really have some.

That would definitely be cool. Reading through the old TNG Companion, you see the writers and directors often lamenting all the extra scenes that had to be cut out.

I wonder if down the line those two seconds are found, would they institute a disc replacement program?

Probably not. Once it's done, it's done.

Possibly. It might have to wait until the very end of the TNG-R project if they have more than a few instances of missing film, just to save on costs, but who knows. They might reissue the BDs with the correct footage and let first adopters have a potential "collector's item".

Since the primary market here is syndication, not home video, it's quite possible they'll go back and fix the episode if they find the footage. A disc replacement may or may not happen, though.

I agree, I'm sure they'll fix the episode so it's in full HD for syndication and future releases, but I'd be quite surprised if they actually issue replacement disks.
