After closer inspection, did anyone notice how poor the mattes are?? The model doesn't even look the same after the sloppy cutting...and the planet itself...its not even round!!

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Mike & Denise Okuda on the phone about the TNG Remastered Project. I will be posting the full interview transcript in a series of Exclusive updates over at TrekCore. Mike & Denise were both fantastic in answering my questions, and I hope I've managed to pose most of the questions that fans have directed to me at TrekCore, and that I've read here.

Part 1 of the interview is here: http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/okuda1.html

In this part we chat about Comic Con, episode choices for the cinema screenings later this month, bonus features, audio commentaries and CGI planet design!

Be sure to revisit TrekCore over the next two days for the remaining parts of the interview where we will discuss extended episodes, fixing mistakes, lost film, DS9 in HD, deadlines, black card and the phenomenon that is Star Trek!

All my thanks and best wishes to Mike & Denise. It was a pleasure :)

I came running as soon as I read "DS9 in HD". :P Oh, nothing would make me happier. I fully intend to buy every TNG season for two reasons. One of them is, indeed, in hopes that DS9 is remastered.

Thankfully, even if it isn't, I'll still be happy with my purchases.

Thanks TrekCore for the interview with Mike and Denise!

Good stuff!
Thanks for asking about the commentary issue! Still can`t see why they can`t
at least port the already-existing Okuda commentary from "Best of Both Worlds"
for example, to the new Blu release? (in 2013 or whenever)

Looking forward to Part 2 of your interview,
Can`t wait to hear the Okudas address the "Measure of a Man" rumours!!!

Cheers

In the interview Mike Okuda had this to say:

Mike Okuda said:
Well, CBS Paramount looked at Star Trek and they knew that there was a tremendous demand to see this in high definition. [...] Fortunately, CBS has faith in Star Trek and Star Trek’s standards and they said ‘OK, we’re going to take a gamble. We’re going to make this huge investment. We’re going to put a huge amount of effort and bring Star Trek back in a big way.’

The way he talks about the wish of CBS to bring back 'Star Trek' rather then TNG makes it sound like they intend to remaster the entire franchise! From TOS to ENT! Is this blind optimism on my part or is this a valid interpretation of Mike's statement?

I don't think they said that they wouldn't be porting them over, they just said they couldn't take on the project of making new ones.

I think you can be forgiven for being optimistic. I questioned Mike & Denise specifically on DS9 later in the interview, so stay tuned to TrekCore for their full answers on the topic!

My two cents: obviously their focus is solely on TNG at present, and naturally future endeavors will depend on sales for the TNG Blu-Rays.

Correct. I'm pretty sure they should be ported over, but the season three set isn't even on the radar yet, so don't expect to hear news for a while.

Mike and Denise simply said they are running full throttle with the conversion of the episodes themselves at the moment and that they don't have the time to take on audio/text commentaries at the same time right now. But please note, they didn't rule them out. Both Mike & Denise clearly love doing these commentaries, so I'm sure (judging from what they said last night) that if they get a break in the schedule or an opportunity presents itself - that they'll consider doing more for the blu-rays.

Sounds good! Thanks for that.
And I hope we do get more commentaries if Mike and Denise get a break from their heavy workload!
But it`s still disappointing that season one on blu-ray is a commentary-free-zone! As was the DVD version.

I get that Mike and Denise were way too busy...but why didn`t CBS enlist the talents of some of the actors, writers and directors who made season one, to provide commentary?

I'm not sure how compensation for commentary tracks is handled, but I wouldn't be surprised if they would bump up the price a tad to compensate for the extra expenditures needed to create audio commentaries.

It certainly used to be the case for Classic Doctor Who that the commentaries were the most expensive extra.

But I guess Who fans are some what spoilt with 90%+ getting them.

There's a lot to like about the first season.

Agreed. Even as uneven as it is there were quite a few things I liked when I last rewatched it. I'm looking forward to revisiting this as well as Seasons 2 and 3 when remastered.

What I like about this is that we"re getting enhancement of what was already there rather than wholesale arbitrary changes a la TOS-R. But no point in rehashing that argument.

I'm anxious for the 24 minute documentary on the making of the bluray It'll show how they made the decision to recomposite instead of re-doing the FX wholesale. I've been fine with the few changes they have made, though there are maybe some small ones I still wish they'd do.

Having the elements to recomposite (unlike TOS) probably helped. Especially since they had to reconform the episodes anyways.

If they had final cuts on film (like TOS), or if they had lost the source materials (like TOS), I have no doubt that TNG would have received the same treatment as TOS.
