Bumping this thread with a heads-up to a set of "Mission Farpoint" iPhone wallpapers I just did. I'm a sucker for sharp and crystal-clear retina lock screens, and with the sampler disc out I decided to just make my own using the screencaps from TrekCore.com.

Just to be clear, I didn't just scale the images down to the iPhone screen size, no, I actually handpicked the nicest images and optimized them for the small but beautiful screen (in most cases I had to add belivable top and bottom halves, in some I actually had to splice two or three different screencaps).

You can download the free set of 50 wallpapers here.

I hope there a some who'll enjoy these. Let me know if you do. :)

If those were 800x480 for Windows Phone, I'd be all set...

This stuff looks great. The umbilical shot looks good but I do have to say I've never been a fan of this shot. Something wonky to my eye about the composition and perspective. Flat in the foreground and the E is at an odd angle for me.

They did a great job restoring it, just don't love that shot to begin with for some reason.

I've tried in recent years but I just couldn't get past the video quality.

That's my problem too. I tried watching TNG on my 47 inch LCD TV streamed through Netflix, and it looks like absolute crap. TOS-R, on the other hand, looks fantastic.

Oh I can handle that, my enjoyment overrides any of the picture qualms, even though I'm a stickler for picture quality. I go through phases where I watch the tv shows and right now I'm in a non-trek watching phases...lasting since just after thebluray came out of STNG. I will prob not go into the STNG watching phase till July. :-)

RAMA

I can't get over those unrestored vs. restored comparisons. Night and day. It's a testament to both the restoration job they've done and I guess also the craptastic quality of the DVDs.

Well, to be fair, the show looked just fine on first-run back in the late '80's when I was in high school and watching it on my 13-inch black-and-white television, once I set the antennas correctly

I bought my first 20 inch set (color, of course) in time for the debut, October '87. I had cable and two stations aired it the first couple of years. With cable you would assume the image quality would have been equal, but one station was noticably sharper than the other.

Sincerely,

Bill

Yeah it's amazing what we considered to be a "really sharp image" back in the day. As long as it was in focus and not staticky, we were happy.

Although I will say the limited definition of those old TVs gave shows a great kind of romantic glow that you just don't see anymore with the extra detailed HDTV image. Especially when it came to old black and white shows like Twilight Zone.

I kinda miss that.

There is a million dollar idea. An Instagram type filter app for your web enabled tv and device, to make shows look 'vintage' even when shot perfectly clear.

Hmm, static. That's actually one thing I miss from the analog days of TV (still not that long ago). If weather conditions interferred, the picture might get a bit grainy, but it would still play. Today, with digital signals and whatnot, the image degrades to a blocky mosiac and then outright "freezes".

The latest generation will never experience the "joys" of "snow". ;)

Sincerely,

Bill

The starbase has now been composited better than it was in the movie, we are actually seeing that visual effect better than even the movie could do. Not surprising I guess when you consider todays technology is far superior to 1984 and 1988! On the shot where we see the majority of the starbase look at the areas that are now in total shadow and compare to the original TSFS shot where it appears more like its been 'cut and pasted' on top of the planet painting.

Yeah, you can't beat going back to the original 8-perf VistaVision color negative elements, scanning them at 4k and re-compositing them digitally. Looks fantastic. And Paramount unfortunately will never do that for the TOS movies.

I wonder what elements of the original movies still exist? Can you imagine CBS putting together all the elements of TMP with 2012 tech? Imagine the dock scenes then!

Would be amazing if this CBS team remade the movies like they are remaking TNG! Rescan all the original elements and recut them together at the highest quality. I think they (not cbs) are doing this with the JAWS bluray.

In the case of Jaws, Universal already had a cut negative, so I think they just scanned that (similar to the TOS episodes). Also, the only visual effects in Jaws were traditional animation effects like the shooting stars and the blue/green strobe beacon Hooper uses to track the shark. I don't remember any bluescreen or miniatures in the original Jaws. It was primarily a physical effects movie.

But, you're right, having Trumbull's 65mm VFX rescanned and recomposited would be incredible. But I just don't see that happening unfortunately.

In STII:TWOK there is snow, vertical rolling and audio distortion when Kirk talks with his ex-wife on the viewscreen.

I had brought it up in a Future of Trek thread that what will they do when the signal is not strong other than "Audio Only"?
Would it have digital artifacts only as would be realistically or would analog TV transmission artifacts be added?

And also in TVH as well, as the probe causes all kinds of signal interference. In fact, come to think of it, the sound of static is all OVER that freakin movie!

Never realized how outdated that was until now.

There episodes of TNG where the interference (or weak signal) looks like a mix between digital and analogue. It has plenty of snow, but it also features blockier elements (more like a weak digital signal). I just can't remember which episodes it occurs in (and I believe its multiple).

Have there been any pics of the remastered Borg ships yet? Do we know what they did? Like have they used the old model and just cleaned it up or did they use a new digital model?
I really cant wait to see it in HD...

They're promoting S1 right now, and the Borg didn't show up until S2 (there's even a chance they've not even worked on Q Who yet!).

There's no reason to think they won't be primarily using the original footage, rescanned, as with most of the rest of the stuff that originated as physical models though.
