Ahh glorious!

And -- timely enough -- just finished my 16:9 expansion of the starbase matte. Enjoy:

Yeah it's amazing what we considered to be a "really sharp image" back in the day. As long as it was in focus and not staticky, we were happy.

Although I will say the limited definition of those old TVs gave shows a great kind of romantic glow that you just don't see anymore with the extra detailed HDTV image. Especially when it came to old black and white shows like Twilight Zone.

I kinda miss that.

I went from a 13" color tv that my mom bought me to a 19" family tv and I was so happy with that!! The picture didnt bother me too much, though I noticed some imperfections...what was worse was interference, and lost picture, that I hated. Later on of course I bought a 25" and 27" of my own as the show was coming to a close, and had a surround sound system...which I bought mainly for STNG's award winning sound.

Its kind of shocking that the "glow" you talk about was fuzziness of the picture. I don't really miss that at all.

Well, it's 79 days between now and Tuesday, July 24th. Plan accordingly. I don't know about you, but coincidentally, I've got just about 79 hours of television I haven't looked at in a few years.

There episodes of TNG where the interference (or weak signal) looks like a mix between digital and analogue. It has plenty of snow, but it also features blockier elements (more like a weak digital signal). I just can't remember which episodes it occurs in (and I believe its multiple).

The hostage tape in STV breaks up in some weird digital way so STV is the most futuristic movie in Star Trek history!

I'm Trekked out for awhile, have been for months. But I'll be ecstatic when season 1 finally comes!

And then you'll watch it, and realise you should have waited for S2 or 3 ;)

No I actually like a lot about season 1
Not all fans like the same things, so its actually nice that a season I really, really dislike (Its my least liked season of any Trek series) is enjoyed by others.

Of course back then, I was so happy to get new Trek, I really didn't care.

God, such a huge, huge improvement.

The various FX shots, and this matte for the 11001001 episodes so far are teh shots that have impressed me the most.

Of course having original filmed (for film) elements didn't hurt. As those elements will have far more polish then what the FX team could ever do for a tv time frame, for any of their shots.

And of course the upside, is they look better here redone, then the quick and dirty bluray release of Trek III.

Crossing my fingers that the blurays will have labled scence selections like the dvds did. This lazy trend of not having them on blurays has got to stop.

Some of it is hard to put a finger on. There's a mix of nostalgia, along with admiration that Gene actually attempted to put on a show that was not only evolved in it's universe, but also for American TV period. I also enjoy the photography, music, "atmosphere" of many of the early episodes, and they in turn will look fantastic in HD!

Yeah for me it's not so much the episodes themselves, but the fun of seeing an early, more experimental version of TNG where they were clearly still figuring stuff out.

In fact with the bigger and more bombastic style, it almost feels like a different show at times-- with the kind of storytelling (Evil twins! Pleasure planets!) that we might have seen in the 70s or something. That's the aspect I enjoy the most from the first two seasons.

I absolutley love season one. Episodes like 11010101 (or whatever), the big goodbye, coming of age, where no one has gone before.... the list goes on but season one has some of my favorites.

i'd watch it right now if i weren't holding out for the blu rays

I agree w/ these sentiments about S1. At the time, I was absolutely thrilled not only to have a new weekly Trek series, but that they were really trying to show an evolved humanity and question some current thoughts about culture, etc. It's only in retrospect that I can see where some of the episodes fell flat dramatically.

At the time, however, I watched my VHS-recorded episodes over and over, especially during the hiatus before S2.

After the S1 BD was announced, I sold off my DVD set, so I should be ready to watch the episodes again when I get the BD.

Speaking of VHS, was everyone else attempting to record out the commercials during taping, or was that just me? I remember vividly sitting on the couch with the remote control, and constantly trying to hit the pause button at JUST the right time so I would have a perfect, commercial-free copy to watch later.

Sigh, those were the days. :D

I tried. But I'd always forget to unpause the VCR when it came back from a commercial break.

I did that for any show I liked. Absolutely for the various treks.

I would hit the stop button, then rewind to just before the commercials started (multiple retries were required), then try to hit the Record button again just when the show would restart. Thankfully there was the BBC which made things a lot less complicated.
All that would end up in a closet full of VHS tapes. Now an entire series fits on a single USB key :)
