I don't really see those things as "charm" as such, I'm in favour of the best possible presentation of the series. When we're talking about effectively remaking the whole series from the rushes, some things will inevitably be different. The whole HD presentation is something that was never intended.

It's just a change in resolution, nothing else. It doesn't change anything about the composition of shots, the design of elements or the content of scenes. Rushes and improvisation and stock shots and mistakes are part of any film production, plain and simple. TNG has always been a show where they say "Distance to target five thousand kilometers" and then they show an external space shot where the ship is only 500 meters away. Picard says "Increase speed to warp 6" and Geordi says "Aye sir, full impulse." Should we re-dub this because it's an error or should we just keep it as it was because it has been part of the show for 25 years already?

That's not remotely what I'm saying. I'm saying that inevitably some things will be altered, given technology has moved on and it would be odd to have a pin-sharp 1080p picture with fuzzy orange video-type phasers overlaid. It won't look right in a high definition presentation.

I'm not talking about correcting perceived errors or dubbing dialogue at all. As far as we know it's a generally faithful remastering of the original. We'll have to wait and see how they handle the video effects that need replacing.

Re: Entire series to be remastered for Blu-Ray

We'll have to see what they price a season set at. My guess is $40 wholesale, so maybe $60 to $80 retail. Amazon doesn't even have a placeholder listing for the taster set yet.

$60-$80 retail for a Paramount BD DVD Set is laughable, the TOS sets on BD have a SRP of around $130, about what the SRP of the DVDs sets were when the DVDs first came out 10 years ago.

I'd expect the BDs for TNG to be much in the same price-range, around $130 retail, though when they first come out they'll be cheaper per Best Buy's usual first-week release sale and they'll be cheaper on Amazon probably all of the time.

Yeah, an SRP of $130, but who in their right mind pays full price, which probably represents a 200% markup? Individual seasons of TOS on Blu-ray go for $60-80, and that's what most sensible people would expect to pay.

Does anybody know if the cheesier matte paintings of planetary scenes and structures will be revised, especially those from the early seasons?

You see, while I feel it will be nice to have the picture upgraded to HD (preferably not cropped to 16:9), I don't care that much about them fiddling with effects shots, mattes, and so on. If you've seen enough theatre, you learn how to fill in those sorts of detail yourself provided the story, script, and acting are compelling enough. No amount of CGI enhancement would save "Shades of Gray" from being as dismal as its name would suggest.

Whether the matte paintings are upgraded won't affect whether I buy it at all. Since they did it for TOS though, and made a big deal about it actually, and since some of the early matte painting efforts in original run TNG really were subpar even at the time, I was just curious.

As long as the people doing the conversion are the fans that I suspect they are, and not mere hacks for hire, I think we will be pleasantly surprised with what we get. I'm even thinking of buying (not renting) the taster set ("Encounter at Farpoint", "Sins of the Father", and "Inner Light") just to see if committing to buying the whole thing will be worth the outlay.

Most of the mattes were really good, so they'll probably only be tweaked. They don't have perspective problems or lack of detail issues like the TOS mattes. Expect a few moving goodies to be added in but very few totally redone mattes.

There was that one matte cityscape that kept showing up almost as often as that bloody Excelsior. So if they fix that, I'm OK with it.

Angel One I think...they re-used it 6 times I believe.

There are probably only 8-10 episodes out of 176 I would normally not want to re-watch, and I would watch them in HD to see the changes made.

And since they fixed that one matte that showed up all the time in TOS (i.e. they took it out of "Wink of an Eye" and put in a new CGI 'scape), I see no reason why they couldn't do the same here.

Soon...

soon.

The preview has me excited. I'll defintely buy the sampler, if only for "Encounter at Farpoint" to see how the new/improved SFX will be. Later on, I'll definitely get the first 3 seasons, likely get the fourth, and might pick up 5, 6, & 7 on discount. It'll be exciting watching these in a whole new light like this!
