The OFFICIAL STNG-R general discussion thread!

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Can't wait to see the shots in eps like 'Booby Trap' & 'Time Squared' in 1080p HD :D It would have been a travesty to lose this brilliant & painstaking model work for cheap CGI. So many great VFX shots in the series - too many to list.

As for the live action... can't wait to see that as well!

The soundstages of season 1 won't look too good though, particularly ones like The Arsenal of Freedom or Skin of Evil, but it'll still be great :)

This is easily the coolest/best Star Trek news since the first JJ movie was announced. A great day in Trekkie fandom.

The could touch them up a bit. Almost 25 years since the first episode aired. They can do that now pretty easily.

I would not say that! It can be done, but it's a lot harder than sprucing up a few static matte painting shots!

I can't PM you so give me an e-mail address.

Ho-humm. The FAQ says private-messaging enables at 28 posts, but it didn't. Thanks for the offer, but I'd rather not post my mail address in public :(.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Way I understand it, everything that wasn't created in camera is going to redone, at least that makes sense to do it that way. But that I mean, Photon Torpedoes, Warp FX, Phasers etc. The warp effect in that trailer does look a lot cleaner than it did before.

Having said that. OMFG THIS IS AWESOME :D

Better tell it to AntonyF. Can you PM me then? I tried something to see if it'll work...

WOW, look at the windows...

The cool thing about those episodes is that, particularly with "Arsenal of Freedom," the backdrop is a solid color like blue or orange and can be chroma-keyed in the digital realm and replaced with more jungle or desert and better skies with clouds and moons.

Nope, private messaging is completely disabled.

Let's try one of those disposable email thingies: rama.10.sho_spamgourmet@spamgourmet.com should work for 10 mails.

Yes I thought this when I saw the episode but I was uncertain as to whether or not they could such a thing because of the environment, trees/leaves etc and the camera movements, but I might be underestimating todays technology?!

I think the sky is easiest to do, anything more interactive will be less likely.

1) Be sure to crank the resolution to 720.

2) Note that they corrected the Enterprise on the package.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Someone on the Trekmovie comment thread posted this:

Whenever the Enterprise went to warp (the slingshot effect) the lights went out because the move was done in camera at ILM, it was too difficult and time consuming to do multiple passes on the model for that effect. It wasn’t until they did GENERATIONS that the 1701-D could warp with the lights on: and it was because all those shots used a CG 1701-D. Same with the USS Voyager: a CG ship was used in place of the model to warp with the lights on. The trailer preview has the ship with the lights on. So they did a fix while recompositing.

Ok didn't notice that...chalk it up to low rez.

With professional motion tracking software like boujou and 3D environment software like Vue, things are much easier today.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Reading the literature...looks like the launch was set in January instead of December specifically because 2012 is the 25th anniversary year.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Sooooooo cool. I never bought TNG on DVD, but I just might end up getting the Blu-rays when they begin releasing them. This is going to be awesome! :D

Hmm, that's only half true. The actual warp jump used a small two-foot model of the Enterprise, because ILM didn't have half a mile of space for the camera move that the six-footer would have needed. The two-footer wasn't lit internally like it's larger brothers. If you look closely you can see the change, but it's quickly obscured by the warp flash. The HD version seems to be enhanced with CGI to make the join less obvious, with the ship now illuminated. Looks pretty cool.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

Looks like they have done a great job with the live action footage as well as the 35mm model shots. I knew they would hold up well, since they were done with feature film equipment and professionals, especially the ILM stuff for the pilot. Can't wait for more!
