I am *so* happy we arent losing the model work, particularly the excellent ILM work and the best best best thing is that because they are recompositing them they can make subtle improvements that make it even better. We have seen one example of this already when the Enterprise jumps to warp in the opening sequence, the transition from the 6ft to 2ft model seems to have been replaced by a much better looking CGI version which is nice and smooth!

There will be various updated effects all over the place, but the best thing of all is that the models are kept instead of being replaced by cheap CGI! Fantastic news, brilliant trailer. I can't wait to buy this.

Re: Aspect Ratio being 4:3, I have been for 16:9 all the way but ultimately I am just happy to have this series in HD instead of soft, blurred VHS tape ;) I can live with it and I think it'll keep the internets happy :)

Yeah, TOS looks fine in 4:3 and if you have a black TV and watch in a darkened room you don't really notice the black bars.

The only bad thing is that there's not going to be any real variety in terms of the space footage, just the same stock shots we've all seen before. If we're lucky they might put in a CGI ship here and there to provide some variety from the usual Excelsior/Oberth/Miranda.

I'm guessing there will be a small percentage of new shots, but most will be original. We may see a good percentage of "enhanced" matte paintings? That was a strength of the TOS-R.

I guessed $20-30 retail, and it's $21.99...Amazon may have it for $15.99 or so, not a bad deal.

I understand this, but at least the stock shots you speak of are all 35mm photographs of ILM made models for the feature films that should look damn good in HD. Maybe they will add a couple of stock shots to add some variety like you suggest? I guess we will find out when Season 1 comes out in 2012. Ultimately they are far superior to budget CGI.

Absolutely. I will take the stocks shots over cheap CGI any day of the week.

The upside of compositing model shots from 35mm OCN (original camera negative) is you can't get any better compositing.
The downside is the 4 & 6 foot ENT-D physical models were made with the intention of being seen in 480i resolution. The closeups will show the flaws. Oh well.

The video color will be the best it can possibly be from the film with 10-bit scans and color correction done with state-of-the-art equipment. This remastering effort will show what can be done with OCN & remastering an old TV series.
This project will be the ruler to measure all remasterings from all non-cut-negative shows.

Even shows like NYPD Blue & ER had deliverables of a cut negative to store in the vault. That is how the ER TV series went to TNTHD in HD & the DVD's (released in 2003) were made in widescreen going back to season 1.

I can really only think of a handful of TV series that have been telecine'd to HD years after the initial SD master & broadcast for release in HD:
The Twilight Zone, The Prisoner, TOS-R, Hogan's Heroes, Seinfeld. All of those had a cut negative though.

Looks like CBS wants to get Blu-ray product out for 2012 & 2013 (before the Trek XII feature hits cinemas).

I had hoped the 4ft model would be absorbed into the 6 foot model with new FX. They may yet have to..

Glad the model shots are still being used - they look great. Will need a few new (CGI ?) shots to break up the monotony though.

Still don't like the Enterprise D though - is it too late to change it ?

    ;)

They aren't doing it because the CGI is not up to snuff, it most certainly IS...but not redoing most of the FX brings the 6-7 year timetable we talked about for completion of this project WAY down!

Those cleaned up shots look beautiful, I grew up on TNG and seeing the footage this clear, wow. Damn VHS was an eyesore, but I didn't realise that much quality was lost.

Wow. I understand people were unhappy to double dip once they purchased TNG episodes.
Star Trek TNG - The Complete First Season had a DVD Release on March 26, 2002 with a costly list price of $140. for 26 episodes.
    It's now been 9 years.
Yes for you Flake it will be a significant upgrade to HD on Blu-ray. I'm only guessing you are not watching your VHS tapes on a HDTV at the moment?
I'm not saying VHS is obsolete as a recorded physical medium you can transport elsewhere but I am saying there is a huge difference going from VHS to 1080p HD Blu-ray. So much so you may be taken out of the story by the details seen in the resolution like this.

Re: The OFFICIAL STNG-R discussion thread!

CGI when done right is great, getting CGI right though requires lots of render time and the correct render settings by a 'good' company like Zoic who did BSG. This costs a fortune and would force CBS down the cheaper route of less render time and less time to get the FX right which would mean computer game CGI. Using original shots is the way to go. I think the 6ft model will hold up well in HD as shown by Generations but I am not looking forward to seeing the 4ft model which was definitely designed for SD by making all the details on the hull plating stand out x10 from the 6ft model. Many shots of the 4ft model look ugly in SD (though lots of shots look great! Mostly from the top) but never mind! Its still a massive improvement.

Maybe the 4 foot will end up looking a lot better in HD.

Sorry, I should not have written VHS tape. I was infact referring to the Betamax analogue tape masters of the early seasons which apparently had barely anymore resolution than a VHS tape! I did buy the DVDs back in 2002 and will buy them once again now they are on blu-ray. I don't mind paying a lot of $$$ for a series I have loved since I was about 5 years old and grew up with, its well worth the money!
