The Ocampa homeworld...and Genesis Device?

Anyone wonder what happened to them after the Caretaker's stored energy ran out? A destroyed ecosystem, Kazon around...

...actually I think this planet, with its sealed-in caves and barren surface, might have been a good candidate for the Genesis Device...too bad the Caretaker didn't have that technoloogy?

Genesis device eliminates all life on a planet. That would include the subterreanean Ocampan life.

Re: The Ocampa homeworld...

Hmm, you're probably right. Although I wonder how Phase II was done in the 'Genesis Cave'.

If the Caretaker had the power to take starships from 70,000 LY away, perhaps he could have had the power to evacuate the Ocampa temporarily to the Array? Maybe only a fraction of the population...

Or how about a temporary exodus to the surface while Phase II was deployed in the caves?

It's a test. The final Genesis Device was a planetary thing. The problem about an exodus of the Ocampa would be... an exodus to where? Short of finding a benevolent planet of reasonable aliens to settle them in, it'd be hard to find a world for them to settle that's better than Ocampa - plus the logistical concerns. I guess he felt the easiest way was to find a species biologically compatible and then make the Ocampa their problem.

Re: The Ocampa homeworld...

The Voyager String Theory books touch on the Ocampans, the Caretaker, and their planet a bit. Plus they explain evil Kes too. They're a pretty good read, if you haven't read them.

Re: The Ocampa homeworld...

Dropping Genesis on Ocampa would have been fine with me.

We get a nice earth-like planet, and the Ocampans are obliterated.

I don't see the downside.

Re: The Ocampa homeworld...

^ Ummmm.... the protomatter in the origin matrix? The one that makes Genesis inherently unstable and will destroy the Ocampan homeworld in a fit of protomatter....

...bummer.

Not necessarily. David Marcus may have been wrong. The Genesis Planet could have been falling apart because Khan detonated the weapon in the middle of a nebula, when Carol Marcus clearly said that it was to be used on a moon or dead object.

Now that you mention it, what did happen to the Ocampa? They couldn't have faired to well. I think their best shot would have been to stay underground, even after their stored energy ran out.

That "Caretaker" didn't take very good care did he?

The Ocampans probably would have liked the planet where the 37s lived, if they knew about it, had a way to get there, and would be accepted. I wonder if that ever occurred to Kes.

It was silly. Caretaker was concerned about the Ocampa to the extent that he was able provide an entire underground city with power and draw vessels from 70K light years away, but it never occured to him to simply move them to another planet?
