The Night Crew

^I can't love you, darling, for I have given my heart to another!

Hey now! I just can't fathom limiting myself to just a couple of genres, or to just a few bands. I have over 700 different artists on my ipod, in a multitude of genres and I still feel like I'm missing out on so much!

Just 700? :p While I haven't a clue as to the number of artists, I know I have well over 5,000 albums in my collection ranging from John Coltrane, Son House, Hank Williams, Journey (The Old stuff.), See-Saw, Jay-Z, and Sergei Rachmanioff (Performed by various people.) The covers just about everything.

If there's one thing that really bugs me it's people with a myopic scope of music.

The thing about music is, it's pretty universal. And sure, tastes vary, but sometimes I get the impression that people don't appreciate some flavors of music just because it's not playing on the band-wagon's radio.

my CD player/ AM/FM radio does me well enough
Part of it's being on the go without a car. It's nice to have every album and song I own on a little beast the size of a deck of cards in my pocket. Sometimes the train stops and doesn't start again for 25 minutes, sometimes the doctor doesn't see you until an hour after your scheduled appointment time, sometimes you get the urge to go on a spontaneous 40 mile bike ride. I carry a book and my ipod at all times for such emergencies.

the only way to get anywhere here is to drive
And I don't know how to drive.

^I have 7019. :) And I know all the lyrics to all of them! :maniacal laughter:I've become almost totally reliant upon mine. As I mentioned in my first post of the evening, I spent 4 hours today wandering around the city, listening to Sigur Ros with my glasses off. :)
Yeah, see, I buy all my cds then put them on my ipod. I am way too cheap for that many songs :p
You pay for your music? ;)
When I was in college, every students' computer had to be hooked up to the school's network. It was not very secure, so it was quite simple to hack the network and access every students' hard drive.

It was a great way to, um, acquire new music.

That's 700 artists, at, let's estimate, 6 albums per (more for some, less for others), that's 4,200 albums. Nothing to be ashamed of. :p

For the most part my favourite bands have at least 4 albums. And my bands arent always...well known.

I usually just ask for money or giftcards so i dont confuse them with what exactly I want :p

I can't imagine! My family are very into gift-giving and gift-making; and I think each one of my family members would say with the purest honesty that they enjoy giving gifts more than receiving. We tend to get each family member one or two gifts and on top of that we play Secret Santa with our stockings (with a $50 limit) -- and we have to guess by our gifts who got our names. We do a lot of home made gifts (especially on leaner years). Last Christmas I crocheted a beret for my younger sister, she knitted me a scarf (it's really nifty: if you lay the scarf flat on a table and look straight at it you see only grey and white stripes, but if you look at an angle you see diamonds and swirls!). One year my older sister made us all home made scented soaps and candles.
I feel that Christmas isn't about getting what you wanted, but what you didn't know you wanted. If I want a to read another Agatha Christie I'll go out and buy it, but I'll much more cherish the copy of The Stolen Child, a book I hadn't heard of, that my mother gifted me because she read it and knew I'd like it; my brother-in-law knew I was a as much a Bowie fan as he, so he compiled the 33 albums for me; my dad found a coffee mug with the Minister of Silly walks on the side and filled it with my favorite tea leaves; one year my sister treated the two of us to dinner and Le Feux "Seattle's best female impersonator show," as my Christmas present. These are not the kinds of things I'd go out and buy for myself, but are the kinds of gifts I love getting and giving. And every year I spend November and December agonizing over what to make or buy my friends and family, but it's a wonderful agony, and it pays off on Christmas morning when I watch them unwrap their gifts.
Well, some artists have a lot more than six.

Hell, I have 38 Pink Floyd albums. (That's a lot of bootlegs.)
My brother-in-law gave me 33 David Bowie albums for Christmas last year. :)

Holy christ, you lucky bastard. I think I only have about 15 Bowie albums...
He compiled them all onto a disc for me, it must have took him some time to download, rip, and compile all the albums. It didn't cost him anything to make, but he knew I'd love it, cheap or no, and that's what made it a great gift.

Oh yeah, totally, i feel the same way about most things except music. And i do like getting into different musicians and everything, but when it comes to my family we don't always agree on that type of thing. So when it comes to gift giving I'd rather get interesting things in other areas like books and the like. Music is something if you want me to listen to something new just write me a list of suggestions and i'll be as happy as a clam. I dont need people buying me cds for me to get enjoyment out of the music, the good suggestion in itself is priceless.

I just dont want people going overboard on something I won't utilize.

^Here's a great Christmas music-giving story: We were all opening presents on Christmas morning -- my grandmother annoyingly clucking her tongue at gifts that cost more than $10, my mother trying to keep the dogs and cats from climbing the tree, me desperately downing cups of coffee to stay awake (I have chronic insomnia, as evidenced by my presence here at 2 in the morning). My little sister has wit as sharp as a knife, even on early mornings. She had slowly unwrapped her gift from our dad, stuck the bow to my head, and displayed the gift for all to see: an album by Tom Waitts (boy was I jealous, she burned it for me later :) ). My grandmother squinted down at the cd and squawked, "Tom Waitts? Is that Music?" drawing out the u interminably, and my sister replied, "Well, it depends on whom you ask..."
