Just watched the latest heroes episode again. Rather bored at the moment. Just read something interesting about the graphic novels.

Hello IceHoneyRose, or anyone this may concern (I hope you find this tomorrow...er... tonight,) how about starting a female, or non-nerd Night Crew where the female night owls and the non-nerd Europeans could meet?

I live at GMT+2 (only +1, soon, with daylight savings time) and I am such a night owl (especially since I started working at home - I'm kind of like RoJoHellraiser with nights - cf post #9) that I even end up being synchronized with American night owls. I also sometimes get up "early" (you know, like, before noon).

We could start it and see what happens.

It's so much better the second time around, too. They laid so much groundwork in the beginning of the first season that you don't even realize. It's very quickly becoming my favorite show. I just hope it gets to last long enough to finish telling its story.

I love it, too, but I'm not sure if it will be particularly long-lived. If NBC lets it finish this season and do one more after that, I'd be satisfied, though obviously I'd love to see it go for five years or so.

That's how sleep-deprived I am. But my eyes are still wide open. I'm trying to reverse the conversion to night living back towards the day (Meaning, going to bed no later than 3 or 4 am French time instead of after dawn.)

^ Most of us here understand that eternal struggle. I find the only way to do it is to push the cycle all the way forward to 'normal schedule' time. It's after 6am here, right now. If I want to reset myself, I need to either stay up all day and go to bed at a regular time or stay up as long as I can, sleep for eight hours, and repeat every day, until I'm going to sleep at a normal time. Usually takes me about a week to do it, then I'm usually able to maintain it for another week, then I usually end up staying up too late one night and have to do it all over again.

The thing about me is I was raised by a distinguished linguistics professor and a French teacher.
When family atmosphere was tense, it was linguistics at every meal. Kind of like the use of baseball as a substitute for family conversation in the U.S. (cf. City Slickers)

In that case, I won't argue semantics with you, but I will direct you to this painting, entitled 'Signifier and Signified', which you should find highly hilarious, as I do.

I started using an old SLR from the '70's when I was a teenager and have been steadily getting better at it, but I don't approach anything near a professional level, though some would argue that. I've never done any darkroom work, for instance. Just lots and lots of documentary snapshots I get printed as cheaply as possible.

Within that framework, we can define a further strata of differing categories of nerdiness, if you like. In my case, it includes appreciating odd post-modernist paintings about pop culture.

Like my segue there? That painting is one of my favorite pieces of art. You should look at that website to see many many more brilliant pieces. I'm also a fan of the one entitled, 'No One Wants to Play Sega With Harrison Ford'

That would be a change from the Andrea Mantegna exhibition I saw at the Louvre yesterday. I don't know enough American contemporary art. Although I hit the Smithsonian 2 years ago. I liked the National Portrait Gallery a lot.

I like almost all sci fi shows but I can't do much quoting. The only sign of this in my room is a couple piles of tapes incompletely labeled in pencil.

Well, we have four-eyes (binoclard), but of course the french is more elegant aesthetically. How nice to hear elegant french too after having to listen to jouelle all of the time here.

We don't have anything equivalent to a 'library-rat', though there's the pejorative 'mallrat', which certainly illustrates the difference between the french and americans.

Yeah, Bird and Mantegna are certainly polar opposites, though you can see where Bird deconstructs and references a lot of classic painting styles like Mantegna's. Look at the one entitled, "The Death of Jennifer Sisko".

I'd love to go to the Portrait Gallery. And my knowledge of fine art, in any category other than film and television, is rather lacking. I had to google Mantegna, and I have no doubt that I should be embarassed by that admission.

Sorry I wasn't explicit enough. 'binoclard'... and 'rat de bibliothèque' are fairly inelegant, derogatory words. I was trying to go back on my elegance claim.

*edit* A nerd would be... 'premier de la classe' or col.'tronche' (head); 'cultivé' (cultured); 'intello' (='intellectuel'). But you won't find many Frenchies who combine this and videogames.

I mentioned City Slickers before, because it's one of the latest things I handled. (mere technical adaptation for pay-per-view TV)
I do subtitlings for the deaf, too: documentaries, cartoons, cheesy daytime TV shows in dubbed version.
I got my hands on the DVD edition of the latest Hulk, but they wouldn't let me change much.
I hade more liberty correcting the subtitlings of a handful of Voyager episodes. It was one of my favourite jobs.

How can you be a french-speaking follower of linguistics and not know about jouelle? Well, you probably do, just not by name. It's the kind of lower-class, slangy, evolved from 17th century peasant french spoken by most Quebecois. I can barely understand it, let alone speak it. I'm being fairly harsh, but it's only hyperbole. It's actually pretty interesting.

Okay, you know what? I misspelled it. It's actually 'joual', and I seem to be slightly misinformed about it. See also, Quebec French. By the way, I'd be using proper letter accents, but I don't know how to do it on a laptop with no numberpad.

That really is quite awesome. I really don't even know what else to say. I'd love to know more about how that process works exactly, but I think I should really try and sleep now. If it takes, it was nice talking. If it doesn't, I'll probably be back in thirty minutes.

I would be perfectly content with 3 or 4 seasons. I think that's all it needs to tell a good story (honestly, it could end this year as long as the writers knew ahead of time and could plan for it). I don't think the plot warrants more than a few seasons, and I'd rather it end when it's supposed to end rather than be dragged out.
