The Night Crew

I went to bed at 10pm.

Weird, I know, but I got no sleep the night before, and I made two 2-hour drives yesterday, with a little bit of drinking in between. I wasn't drunk driving, but I was definitely not as alert as I could have been.

So I crashed.

The second the light turns green, one pedestrian starts to cross the street. As soon as he or she makes it to the other side, the light turns red.

What's the typical scenario -- the light is too fast or the pedestrian is too slow?

^ Is this a riddle or did you get stuck at a light earlier today waiting for some geriatric to cross the street?

"So I crashed" is a really poor choice of words here.

I didn't even realize what I was typing. Awesome.

I am alive and well. I started orientation for a new bartending job today. Really exciting stuff. We learned how to use the MICROS computer system...which I have been using at my other bartending job for the last 2 years.

And then at my current bartending job I went in and was trained to take inventory and write orders. Woohoo.

In between, I beat a couple levels of "Force Unleashed."

Now I am going to eat the chicken that has been sitting in my crockpot all day, and I am going to be sad about the fact that I missed the premiere of "Chuck" and "Heroes," but I will also be happy because my best friend TiVo-ed them, so I will be able to watch them later.

Right now I think I'm going to watch some of "Chuck" Season 1 that I bought on DVD the other day.

Oh...good!

I'm now sad AND MAD. My friend just told me he has already started watching his TiVo-ed "Heroes."

We were supposed to do that together!

What a relief! I finally got rid of this godforsaken malware that's been hampering by ability to use the internet for the past few days. It took me forever to find the goddamned thing and neutralize it but I finally got it!

Trouble, indeed. He's a doucheface.

I'm playing the level of Force Unleashed with the star destroyer at the end...WTF is the bullshit?! I've tried to kill this thing at least 8 times. All I need is, like, 10 more seconds before the TIE fighters come back, and I'd be fine.

It came to mind while some large lady was crossing the street. It didn't take her the whole light cycle to do it, but I've seen people that took the entire duration to make it across. I've also seen some people who need the entire light cycle try to cross when it starts blinking "don't walk." That makes for fun traffic stalls.

Hell, I'm a young fit guy and even I've had trouble getting across intersections quickly enough sometimes. It's even worse here in Montreal where almost none of the traffic lights have walk signals of any kind. Can make for interesting situations

You know, legally, you're not supposed to make your first step to cross after the "don't walk" begins blinking. Of course, that's when people try to hurry across, and instead of allowing three or four cars who are trying to turn left to actually turn, they force the lead car to make the turn after the light changes.

And of course you have the occasional driver still in the turn lane who thinks he or she is entitled to go despite the car in front not being able to turn until after the light changed.

I'm talking about not having enough time even before the walk signal changes, which again, there are very few of here. It can be green and turn red two seconds after you've stepped off the curb without any notice. Also, there's no delay between the light on one side turning red and the other turning green. They happen simultaneously, so drivers will often start gunning their engines when they see the opposing light turn yellow.

I always try to be very conscientious of drivers. If they can drive through before I cross that part of the intersection I always wave them through.

I gotta say, i tried a new cocktail today. The bar called it a James Bond, but it was in fact, a Vesper!

  • 3 oz Tanqueray gin
  • 1 oz 100-proof Stolichnaya vodka
  • 1/2 oz Lillet Blanc
  • 1/8 teaspoon (or less) quinine powder or, in desperation, 2 dashes of bitters
It was really good.
