The new sonic screwdriver

Colin Baker did briefly use a "sonic lance". I think it was even included with the recent Sixth Doctor figure....

The sonic screwdriver, even before the TV movie was announced, did also return in the novels, I believe.

Don't sweat it, Starkers. We're looking at en entire generation who believe The Doctor can't get by without a Sonic Screwdriver and Psychic Paper. And who knows? Maybe he genuinely needs them in his old age, you know? ;)

I know...actually I don't mind the phychic paper. It's used sparingly and is kind of limited in what it can do.

I don't really mind the sonic screwdriver really, I just dislike the way it's used so often to do mundane things (like locking doors?) which kinda detracts from it doing wonderful, there's no other way to stop this bomb from going off type things. imo ;)

Given that the slightly-psychic paper is doubtless based on SOME sort of technology, I don't see why it can't be configured to have a function able to access whatever magnetic reader it's swiped through AS IT'S BEING SWIPED and code an appropriate response based on a library of possible codes (or write one itself). It could also be set up to read the mind of the user, who KNOWS he's swiping a door lock or bus terminal and respond accordingly. It's already used to somehow recieve text messages, so it's probably just the equivalent of a really cool smartphone specializing in looking like identification.

I mean, we're working on thin, flexible LCD screens with futurists saying this technology would eventually result in disposable newspapers embedded with updates to stories, video clips and editorial comments as they happen. In a few centuries or millenia, why not have psychic paper after all?

Same.

Its used in the finale to mainly all the episodes, seasons 1-4 at least.

Its again, like Starkers said, its used for silly little things that a swift kick would sort out. just like throwing the cricket ball to stop the mother walking under the falling piano in the 'Family of Blood' two parter. Initiative + Instict + Style = Succesfully thrawting enemies with wits and sometimes, luck.

Its used way too often to escape, hopefully Moffat will take us back a few pegs and use it only when its actually needed.

I'm still having a hard time figuring out how it can detect what a non-sentient magnetic card reader wants to see.

When did it do that? Don't doubt it just can't remember :)

Army of Ghosts - Rose uses it to get through a card-reader locked door at Torchwood Tower.
didnt the Doctor use it as an oyster card in Planet of the Dead? because not only does the Doctor steal from cash machines, he thinks he is above Transport for London

Also, The Doctor paid his bus fare with it in PotD...

I think one of the Ninth Doctor books mentions that he considers it a small payment for all the times he saves the day.

 well if he considers it small payment then all is well, I will try that excuse if I go shop lifting.

Why can't we get a modernized Doctor Who. I mean the costume, the Tardis, and now the screwdriver all feels so retro and kind of ugly looking. One of the things I liked about Eccleston was it felt like 2005. Tennant I liked too but it was starting to look way too formal. This one feels like the show moving back towards the 60s. I hope it looks better on screen but this is way too much retro for my tastes I think.

Eccleston's outfit was boring. It was too contemporary. I only started watching the show with Tennant's first season, but I'm digging Eleven's retro look.

and how exactly would this modern TARDIS look like? and bear in mind that if its not a blue police call box? and you don't really want to be the one to blame for changing it?

as for moving back to the 60s? seriously have you not seen the TrekXI forum? if 6 months ago you had told them the new Enterprise would be like it was back in the 60s they would have been over joyed. To think that Moffatt is doing that for Doctor Whos, and some are still complaining, just points out the impossibility of sci-fi fandom.
