It looks like fun. Not entirely sure how horror works in a world where freaky superpowers have been known for decades (unless this movie is out of continuity?), but whatevs.
I did notice that there wasn't any sign of the characters having "freaky superpowers" in the trailer, other than the mention of Mutants.
I knew they would go for a bit of a horror vibe and, with the Demon Bear as the likely inspiration, it's not inappropriate. That being said, they definitely played that up here. Cool to see Magik with her bangs. I think a full trailer will be fun.

Just the opposite maybe. The kids trapped in this place know for a fact that something terrible is chasing them, it's not their imagination. Someone with the power to kill/torture/scare/whatever them.
Psycho is set in a world where knife murderers have been known for millennia, but it's still scary. Horror doesn't have to be about the unknown. Indeed, this trailer suggests that the movie is about the teenagers' fear of their own developing atttibutes and abilities that they don't know how to control, and that's a very universal theme. Conversely, there's also the horror of being a mutant in a world that institutionalizes or imprisons mutants, or worse. There's a whole subgenre of thrillers about people being locked up in institutions, and a number of horror/thriller stories about people being persecuted for what they are (e.g. the recent Get Out).
The Nightmare on Elm Street faces in the stretchy wall thing was a bit groan inducing but maybe just cuz I've watched too many movies. Not sure what I think of the whole horror angle but looking back it seems like NM was always a bit creepy. The Sinkiewicz(sp?) art probably contributed to that. Made me realize it's been a very LOOOOONG time since I've read the books and might need to go back to the well again to refamiliarize myself (and justify all those damn longboxes collecting dust).
Huh. Literally the only clue that this is anything but a completely generic horror flick is a single line of throwaway dialogue. So all this teaser accomplishes for me is making me think "Wow, this movie looks terrible."
Really hope it turns out well for those interested. But I'm officially checking out of the hype train for this one. If word of mouth is really, really good I'll still consider seeing it. But first impressions being what they are, they've pretty much lost my money with this.

I just read a new interview with the director and revealed a couple interesting tidbits about potential future movies. He said that he is saving Warlock and Karma, two characters a lot of people wanted in this movie, for the next one. Right now the plan is for this to be a trilogy, with each movie a different subgenre of horror movie.
It just occurred to me that seeing as how Dani Moonstar's power is to summon a manifestation of others greatest fears, the majority of that trailer could have been manifestations of her power.
That would seem to be the most obvious and most interesting possibility, and probably at least pretty close to what the movie is at least theoretically going for, considering the lines about not being able to control mutant powers. Personally, I think if they go that direction and do it well, this could be one of the best (and most unique) superhero movies we've seen. And I think the trailer is mostly promising so far. The only thing that gives me pause is the level of horror cliche that they're displaying so far. Hopefully the sudden handprints and faces coming out of the walls are also accompanied by other scenes that actually feel a bit more original.
Hopefully it will go the way of Wolverine Origins and it gets forgotten and we get the real New Mutants in an actual X-Men movie (like how we got the real Deadpool eventually) so sequels (which are a more horrific a concept then any "horror" in the movie) are not an issue. If they do end up doing a sequel, they could at least leave poor Karma and Warlock alone. They're ruined enough New Mutants. At least Wolverine Origins only (temporarily) ruined Deadpool and wasted Gambit. New Mutants is ruining most of the team. Then again, since this is probably all an unused horror script with the character names changed to those of New Mutants characters (that's really the best case scenario at this point, since I'll take laziness over active spite when it comes to shit adaptations) , FOX obviously doesn't care about screwing up the New Mutants. I suppose once you've ruined everyone from Colossus to X-23 nothing really matters anymore.
You really need to share your time travel secrets with us some time, because you sure seem to know a hell of a lot more about how the movie turned out than the rest of us do.
You definitely can't be going by the trailer and the information revealed online so far, because none of that has really given us any ideas what the characterizations are going to be like.
Just because it's a horror movie set in a some kind of hospital or asylum, doesn't mean the characters personalities and back stories won't still reflect the comic versions. But then again you've obviously been to the future and seen the movie already so I guess you would know better than I do.
