The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

Apparently a new trailer is coming next month, so we might still get to see some version of this film.
According to Bill Sienkiewicz (a prominent artist on the original run, for those not in the know), he's seen the trailer straight from Josh Boone within the last week or so, and describes it as "phenomenal."
He also mentions that the film has been actively been worked on with the "blessing" of Marvel. Whether that means Marvel Studios just signed off on it or else it's been fully integrated into MCU continuity remains unclear (not that I'd mind either way, to be clear.)

Well, that's certainly promising. Hopefully what we finally get to see is good. I don't care whether it's connected with the MCU, XMU, or entirely on its own, I just want the final product to become publicly available. A lot of people worked on this film and I would hate to see their efforts swept away because of outside factors.

Yeah, after all the work that's gone into this, it really does deserve to get some kind of release.

I think it would be awkward to try to force it to fit into the MCU if it wasn't designed to go there. If it was meant to be part of the Fox X-universe, it should probably have been left there.

Although on the other hand, I just saw Dark Phoenix and found it a reasonably satisfactory way to end the series (review here -- it was certainly flawed and uneven, but so was the entire series, and I think its positives outweigh that). So maybe it's best not to have a straggler come along afterward.

And hey, the Arrowverse has managed to retrofit Constantine into its continuity even though it was never meant to go there. So maybe it could work.

From what I recall of the original trailer, the basic premise seems fairly insular and contained, so if there are or ever were any connections to any kind of larger established continuity it's likely to only really be in the form of the odd name drop and probably not anything directly connected with the actual plot of characters. If that's the case then in theory, any hypothetical switch from XMU to MCU, or excising entierly would simply be a matter of looping a few lines or maybe CG'ing over some production design ephemera, like a headline or whatever.

I'm only curious as to whether this is the case so far as it indicates how they're planning to introduce mutants into the MCU. It'd be kinda cool if they use this as a kind of backdoor to show by inference alone, either that they've always been there but in very small numbers, or it's a totally new phenomenon (possibly thanks to Wanda.)

I'm thinking that they could cut out any references to the X-Men cinematic universe and refrain from any references to the MCU, and just release this a complete stand alone.

Some reports suggest that might be what they're doing, but others hint there might be an attempt to tie it to the MCU. I think I'd prefer the former, because this would be kind of an odd way to debut mutants in the MCU, with the New Mutants instead of the X-Men.

Ideally, it would've made sense as an indirect sequel to the First Class-through-Dark Phoenix continuity, caught up to the present day and featuring the next generation of Xavier students getting their start. Maybe that was the original idea. A shame when corporate shenanigans screw up creative plans.

Most likely yeah. Like I said though, it kinda hinges on what they have in mind for the mutants in the MCU. Sure, they may just file off the Fox serial numbers and let it be it's own thing, but I think it's possible they could do something to at least nod in the direction of it being in the MCU. Hell, slapping on a post credit scene is a fairly simple way to go if that's what they have in mind. ;)

I'm really curious and would love to see it. I could give a damn about what larger verse it fits into.

That part isn't important in and of itself, but it could affect the quality depending on how much and how smoothly they alter the story to accommodate a different universe. For instance, hypothetically, if the original story relied on connections to the Fox X-Men universe, then excising those connections could leave plot holes. Or if they want to add material that links to the MCU, those bits could feel tacked-on and gratuitous. The priority is always the quality of the story; I'm just hoping that any universe changes aren't done in a way that damages the quality.

Less of a loss, but it's also a shame we'll never get to see an on-screen reunion between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams as their respective mutant characters.

I'm glad it looks like the reshoots aren't going to happen after all. For better or worse I wanna see the movie they already made, not some weird patchwork POS like the last Fantastic 4 or Justice League.
