The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

You really need to share your time travel secrets with us some time, because you sure seem to know a hell of a lot more about how the movie turned out than the rest of us do.
You definitely can't be going by the trailer and the information revealed online so far, because none of that has really given us any ideas what the characterizations are going to be like.
Just because it's a horror movie set in a some kind of hospital or asylum, doesn't mean the characters personalities and back stories won't still reflect the comic versions. But then again you've obviously been to the future and seen the movie already so I guess you would know better than I do.

Oh yeah, because FOX has a great track record with keeping the X-Men characters close to the comics  Also, the NM characters aren't horror characters, they need to be students of Professor X but they aren't, they need to wear fucking costumes but I'm pretty sure they're not even going to wear those lame leather suits the FOX-Men have, etc. I could go on, but the point is this is Wolverine Origins levels of fuck you to fans. They're making a shit PG-13 horror movie and giving it the X-Men branding to get a few extra dollars from the few X-Men fans that haven't grown tired of their bullshit.

Generally I'd be one of those people, because I'm a big X-Men fan and I even kind of liked Apocalypse even if it is mediocre. But between the abomination that is Logan, and giant "fuck you" of TV shows like Legion and The Gifted, I officially have no more reserves of patience for the moronic actions of FOX. I like the real New Mutants, and I'm done seeing FOX ruin every fucking character they got in that deal with the devil Marvel made with them all those years ago. When I can watch the movie for free, I'll see how badly they butchered great characters because god knows FOX butchers good superheroes better then anyone else not named Zack Snyder.

It doesn't take a time machine to see any of this, it takes the bare minimum amount of common sense needed to, say, not try to breathe underwater to figure out what FOX is doing at this point.

The comics change settings and genres all the time, so that doesn't mean that these couldn't still be the characters from the comics. What makes a character is their personality, backstory, relationships and powers, and none of those things have to be effected by the change in setting and genre.

I'm not overly attached to the New Mutant characters. They were always a side team I was passively aware of but my funds were limited back in the day so I didn't get the book. Didn't really get familiar with some of the characters till the 90s when high school me could buy more books.

I think the horror movie approach is very daring. I've no idea if the characters involved will make it work or not but I'm highly intrigued. My default setting is to have characters translated as closely as possible. My background on these is lose though so I'll need to see plenty of well thought out criticisms on why this is a bad idea or bad for these characters in this setting.

I think it would be interesting to include the New Mutants in the Marvel cinematic universe, but going only on the existing trailer, I'm not sure if it's the right direction. It's very generic and the horror vibe doesn't really click for me, although I understand some of the context in relation to the source material. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

I think it's good that Fox is willing to make its Marvel-based movies different from each other and set in different genres, even if that means that not every film will appeal to every audience member. Theirs is the oldest ongoing comics-based film continuity, and the second-largest, so it's good that they're willing to experiment and keep things fresh.

Well, I hope they enhance it in a way that fits with the existing story, rather than just tacking on gratuitous shocking or gory stuff that clashes with it or changes it.

Yeah, I'd hate to see them throw in a bunch of unnecessary new horror scenes just to make it scarier.

Funny how "reshoots are a normal part of the process" unless people don't care for the changes being made.

Those are two entirely different things. Saying "I hope the cook doesn't burn the roast" is not even remotely the same thing as saying "I don't approve of roasts." I don't object to the idea of reshoots at all; I just hope they go about it in a smart way rather than a lazy way.

For instance, I'm not much of a horror fan, but it seems to me that if you want to make a movie scarier, a good way to do that might be to deepen the emotional stakes for the characters, to invest the audience more in their goals and their fears, so that the scares have more emotional impact. I think that would work better than just tacking on more gore and violence that isn't integral to the plot or character arcs, which would be the lazy way to do it.

BTW, there are two conflicting reports about the reshoots. One is that they're reshooting to add more horror to the movie, the other is that they're reshooting because the movie is too dark and they want to add levity.

Maybe they want it to be more like The Cabin in the Woods? Both scarier and funnier?

Decent horror movies have suspense, not gore. The Mummy reboot failed because spectacular CGI with zero suspense does not make a good movie.

The first xmen movie had a good deal of suspense but a mediocre finale. If they can tease that out then kudos. I'm looking forward to seeing them do something different.

I'm surprised that someone thinks Logan was an abomination though. I was disappointed that the key Reavers were given no decent airtime and that they failed to reconcile the two versions of Caliban because they didn't even know he was being featured (but accent aside, a man that never goes in the sun would not age much visibly). Otherwise it was a decent Wolverine movie.

Rumours of the X-men's demise should be taken with a pinch of salt because there are a lot of them and they've died in the comics more than once. They're out there off the radar or possibly even off world.

For my part, they need to feature Sinister with clones (or the originals) of all the characters they've allegedly killed off. It's not as if Sinister couldn't fake autopsy reports...

New Mutants wasn't something I was particularly interested in, but I'm hoping it will do well enough in the long run upon release that it becomes harder for Disney to justify scrapping the XMCU for no reason since it (NM) will likely be the first FOX-branded film released post-merger.
