The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

I'm glad it looks like the reshoots aren't going to happen after all. For better or worse I wanna see the movie they already made, not some weird patchwork POS like the last Fantastic 4 or Justice League.

Last I heard, the reshoots were still scheduled to happen in 2019. It was reported in August that Disney was unhappy with the existing edit, but it's been more recently stated that they're more optimistic about the current cut of the film, though it's unclear whether it's just a different edit or the result of reshoots.

Hmm... Looks promising, though I'm not really a horror fan. The early part -- superhumans confined in a clinical institution in order to "cure" them, with Anya Taylor-Joy being involved -- made me think of Glass, which is not the best thing to evoke (a problem with the film being delayed so long), but it does take a very different turn later on, so hopefully that won't hurt it.

The director seemed to say last week that this was his original cut from 2017, but the line "Do you know what a mutant is?" doesn't seem to fit with the Fox X-Men continuity where mutants were a widely known phenomenon. So maybe it was always meant as more of a standalone film, or maybe there have been some changes made after all.

Everything's so isolated it has a sort timeless feel to it, which makes me wonder if it was originally intended to be set post-Logan in the time when most people think mutants don't exist anymore.

Definitely looks very promising and I enjoy how it feels like it's a proper horror of ages past and not some gore flick that's taken over the horror genre.

As one of the few big fans of Glass, I have no problem of being reminded of that film with the set-up here.

The isolationist nature of the film could potentially help it fit within the confines of the MCU if so desired. However, like said before, I'm fine with whichever direction they decide on (last remnant of the XMU, worked into the MCU, or left as a standalone). I'm just happy that it looks like it's finally going to be released.

Unless this makes two billion dollars this is just about recouping investment - the chances of it simply being folded into the MCU after the fact are surely zero?

Cautiously optimistic.

Wouldn't be hugely surprised if the setting is configured to be vague enough to be stand alone, XMCU or MCU depending on how it goes down. Deferring a decision.

It's premature to asume the probability is zero, but I wouldn't consider it likely. I'm thinking of how Universal hastily tacked a new post-credits scene onto Dracula Unchained to give themselves the option of retroactively incorporating it into their then-nascent Universal Monsters shared universe, but then decided that it would be better to do their own separate version of Dracula. It just makes more sense to create something that fits the needs of your own continuity than to take something created separately and try to shoehorn it in.

Though on the other hand, as I said a couple of weeks ago in this thread, the Arrowverse pulled it off with Constantine.

It doesn't need to make 2 billion. Even despite the stupid choices made (by executives) during production, it's still not a super expensive film. Even 500-600,000 would probably be more than enough to get someone thinking seriously about a sequel and 1 billion would be an absolute guarantee (not that that's likely to happen).

The odds of it getting folded into the MCU seem low, but the more money it makes the higher the likelihood of it just existing outside the MCU. Feige has more than enough on his plate that he's not exactly missing out on anything if the New Mutants stay separate for a while, and there's enough New Mutants material for a trilogy at least if people really honestly like this one.

That's been my theory since we heard the kids were being held in some kind of institute rather than being students at the Xavier School. It does seem to fit what we know about the Logan era.
Trailer does look promising, they definitely weren't exaggerating when they said it was going to have a very feel from the other X-movies.

Well, even with FOX gone, it seems that we're still getting one last FOX X-Men related film that actively hates the source material and is just stealing character names for absolutely unrelated bullshit. This is going to be an absolutely obnoxious watch for me when the public library gets the DVD.

FOX may be gone, but they still had one more X-Men ruining bomb release :sigh:

Sounds like you're probably going to like it, based on similar posts about other movies such as Shazam. :)

"Do you know what Mutants are?"

I don't see why that sentence has to mean much. For all we know, the next line is the answer, "Of course."
It's expository, and seemingly an adult talking to a teenager about something traumatic that just happened.

But in the Fox X-Men universe, particularly the revised timeline, mutants have been a publicly known phenomenon since the 1960s, a subject of routine public debate and controversy and participants in a number of highly newsworthy cataclysmic events, and by the '90s the X-Men are world-famous superheroes. In that context, someone asking "do you know what mutants are?" is comparable to asking someone in our reality, oh, "Do you know what immigrants are?" or "Do you know what Australia is?" Anyone older than a small child would be expected to know, so the question wouldn't even need to be asked.

How long after the end of Days of Future Past was Logan? If this is in that era, could it be long enough that teenagers aren't aware of mutants anymore?

Hard to believe it could be forgotten within a single generation. I mean, they're mutants, not Jedi. ;)

Incidentally, someone online is saying they glimpsed something in the trailer that might be Lockheed, Illyana's (and originally Kitty Pryde's) pet alien dragon. If this movie gives Lockheed his live-action debut, I will be very pleased.
