He's using Second Life, a virtual world wherein one can assemble assemble objects out of collections of "prims" or primitive objects such as a cube, sphere, torus, or cone, transforming them with a variety of parameters to create shear, stretching, twists, etc.
You can't really use an application outside of Second Life to build things ... at least not easily; you're essentially manipulating an in-world avatar while doing any construction. I built a TOS Enterprise there a while back, and it wasn't easy.
