The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Nicely done, MadMan1701A; you seem to be getting the contours and proportions just right. Unfortunately, I have to agree that a good model doesn't make me think it's a good design; with the additional angles, I'm even more convinced that the proportions and layout just don't combine into a ship that looks as good as the original, let alone 'better' or 'more believable.' I don't mind change - I just hope that 'change' is 'improvement,' and I don't see any improvement in this design.

But good work on the model :bolian:

Thanks... I think it will grow on you. :)

:wtf:?

Ok, props for modelling the thing, but it doesn't look anything like the publicity shot. This rendering makes the ship look bloody awful. The saucer needs work and the nacelle struts need to be straighter.

I know there is a lot of work to do here, but I really like the new design, even though I'm not 100 percent sold on the nacelles...yet.

This looks ugly, wheras the new design...in my opinion, doesnt.

hmm. maybe I need to do a comparion and and an overlay shot. I admit that there are a few things that don't match up exactly, but it's pretty close, at least as close I can get with my limited abilities. :)

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

You know between this, and the comparison chart, this ship is growing on me.

I suspect I'll be quite fond of it by the time the movie rolls around.

No, I can see the effort that has gone into it (I couldn't do it), but there are some wonderful graceful lines on the new E that are missing.

The more and more I see the new ship, the more I'm really starting to like it.

Nice work though.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

I don't have any fancy 3D programs to do this, but I do have Second Life, so I did this up there.

The nacelles actually look pretty decent right there!

Thanks, Second Life isn't the easiest to work with when it comes to this sorta thing, but I tryed to come as close to the 'official' image as I could.

I think it's close enough when using a limited number of primitives that Second Life has availible to work with.

It also helps with seeing the ship at other angles, and it looks way better at more angles the the 'official' one from a few days ago.

I might alter the Second Life one after I see the new trailer today to get a better image in my head of it in motion and so forth.

* I'm working on that, yup *

For some Reason, I can't see your image?

Its update time again. I tweak a bunch of stuff..... The shuttlebay is much larger, I re-built the nacelles, added the outward curves on the neck that I couldn't see before, put the phaser banks in the right place, and cleaned up some.

I like these nacelles MUCH better! :)

You might have to refresh your browser, I had to, to see if I made any spelling errors.

Hmm, I still can't see your images. I even closed and reopened the browser.

Can you just post a link?

For some Reason, I can't see your image?

Right click on the little red X, then click on "Properties", then copy the url, paste the link, and voila, the image will appear.

Again, not bad at all rendering wise.

Ship is still hideous.

I don't even see a red x at all.... I'm using firefox.

Thanks, it really doesn't look that bad. :) I'm really starting to like it!

What do you think about those shuttles in the shots with the Kelvin?

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

The ship is still growing on me, to me from the first pic the secondary hull just looked off...to small or too far forward something as the photoshops going around have shown. However from your 3d version of the ship I've liked the rear/underneath view looking up at it, seems to be to be the best angle so far...looks pretty cool and niche modeling job!

Thanks. :)

I'm starting the texturing process now. :)

Yes, you're making a believer out of me. Beautiful.

Well, like MadMan, I'm not seeing the ship, either. But I dug it out of the HTML and hope you don't mind my reposting it here:

How many prims did this take? Is it on display anywhere within SL? If you have a SLURL for it, I'd love to visit it.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Wow, i liked the Kelivn but its is great.

I do a lot of 3D and starhip Starship modelling in Lightwave and Maya mainly, mainly starships that are ironically like the new design:shifty: but havnt had the time recently to venture into potential Trek XI equipment/ships etc, I have however done a lot of Pre-TMP stuff such as refit progression and equipment progression that is strikingly simialr to this movie. i would love to but i cant get the time, i work silly hours. :(

Im not a fan of the design i think its awful, but you are making me beleive a starship can fly. ;)

From the rear left angle, its beautiful. Maybe it looks like that on film, who knows. Great work.

I love it so far, keep em coming.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Just saw the trailer. Looks like the impulse engines are now what appear to be plasma exhaust vents at the back of the nacelles (on the 1701 and Kelvin). Apparently the swivel mechanism for the entire nacelle on the 1701 is in the "scoop" below the bussard dome where the strut attaches to it. This is to allow thrust vectoring for the impulse engine, or so I've read. This steering mechanism seems a little 19th century to me. I guess that just swivelling the nozzle, like on the F-22 Raptor, has gone out of fashion by the 23rd century. Perhaps I've just read a bunch of bollocks - here's hoping.

In saying the above, the new 1701 is growing on me, with help, in part, from the work in this thread.

The impulse engines seem to be completely traditional in the trailer.

The little ball-thing on the back of the nacelles glows blue now, but that has nothing to do with the impulse drives, which are traditional looking and red.

That would back up my having read a load of rubbish.

Happier now.
