The new captain.

What about Yvonne Strahovski? She's a bit young compared to the other candidates posted here, at the age of 33 ...
Patrick Stewart played a man a decade older than himself. The 24th century has advanced medicine, so Strahovski could conceivable play someone in their fifties.

Hmmm...Ghost in the Machine. I like it a lot. Room for exotic problem solving, outside-the-box writing, and the Captain manifesting her/him/itself in many different guises, depending on the plot needs! We could all conceivably get our wish for different forms, nationalities and cultures of "Captain"!

I don't know. Sounds too much like the Salt Vampire for my taste. :)

Anyone else think Maggie Q could be a great captain? She can kick ass when need be, as evidenced by her role in Nikita, and with that surname, she was born to play a Star Trek captain ;) She has enough presence and charisma to command such a role and she's at a good age now.

I've seen a lot of Asian actresses suggested in here, and Maggie is another, being of Vietnamese descent.

I don't think they should be casting based on race or gender just to "push the boundaries" but if I was gonna do that, it'd be an arabic woman.

I think you need a really strong lead for a new series someone in the mold of Picard or Sisko rather than any of the others. It's not going to happen because the actor is pretty serious, but I'd have Stephen Dillane as my first choice and maybe Famke Jansen would be a left field choice.

But that's exactly what the entertainment media does, the character's race and gender are determined first, and then they begin looking for the "right" person to fill the role.

Kirk was a white man in his mid-thirties, deliberately. Picard was a older European man. Once the character of Sisko was created, they only looked at Black actors during casting. Similarly, they only looked at women to play Janeway.

I was curious to your opinions on who would be a great actor to cast as the new captain of this show?

See my avatar: Carice van Houten.
Look to the light foe-of-the-week, for space is dark and full of terrors.

Preferably playing an alien race. I'd love to see an Aenar captain, personality: calm, compassionate, composed, confident, cerebral.

No, actually, Siddig was also up for the role. They decided he was too young, so he was cast as Bashir instead.

Also no. The showrunners did consider making the character a male. Nigel Havers and Gary Graham were two of the names bandied about.

This should probably be put in the Future of Trek section by now.

I'm watching Dead Like Me on Netflix, another Bryan Fuller show, and if only for Homeland still being on the air, I would kill to see Mandy Patinkin as the captain. His character, Rube, is nearly always the highlight of each episode.

He's 63, which may be a little too old, but damn, he would kick so much ass on a Star Trek show.

Mads Mikkelsen would be a great captain now that Hannibal is over, with Hugh Dancy as first officer.

I haven't gone through all of the old posts just now, so maybe she has already been mentioned (I tend to think I have the recollection), but at any rate I think that Shohreh Aghdashloo would make a compelling choice. Again, the factor of age might rear its head, but it seems she has long appeared youthful for her actual age.
