The Muppets (2011)

The Trailer is a parody, nothing more, nothing less, and the people behind the movie seem to really love the old-school Muppets... I think (well, hope) this might bring them back to former glory.

Which is why I'll be happy to eat my words. On the other hand, if it does include crass humour, well you'll be able to count me in among the dissapointed. I do really hope they do this right, for the sake of the Muppet franchise.

Fake quotes have been a staple for years.

Which is both obvious and completely beside the point.

There's no need to use real quotes when fake ones make the point.

No, they kinda make the opposite point. Real quotes of praise from decades past make the point "These are beloved characters with a reputation for high-quality content and they're worthy of your attention." Resorting to fake quotes implies "This is just some silly thing that nobody real would say anything nice about." Don't get me wrong, there are contexts where fake quotes are perfectly fine, but in this particular context, it feels out of place to me, and moreover, it feels like a missed opportunity, like the makers of the trailer were more interested in showing how clever they were than in celebrating the Muppets.

I dunno, maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe I would've found the trailer funnier if I hadn't found that music so thoroughly unpleasant and irritating. But the whole thing just felt off to me.

^In a vacuum, sure, it's a valid joke. But as I already explained (why doesn't anyone listen to me?), I think that if the goal is to reintroduce the Muppets to a new, potentially skeptical generation of viewers, real quotes would've done that more effectively. It would've demonstrated that there's a lot of love and respect for these characters, that they don't need to have praise made up for them.

I think the introduction of the Muppets to a new generation of fans will be done more by the old generation of fans, than these trailers. I don't think they are trying to make a edgy movie, I think they are trying make a Muppet Movie, and my guess is with the Thanksgiving release date you will see a lot of multi-generational movie going. I know my family has already adjusted our thanksgiving plans so we can go enmasse, and that the younger generation is slowly being indoctrinated as we speak, just as I was.

Really guys? It's the freaking Muppets. I guarantee you're thinking about this too much.

Anyway that first trailer is awesome. I'm really looking forward to this.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, it was just a funny parody and I doubt the teaser reflects anything we will see in the movie. As a fan of the Muppets since I was a kid, I have no problem with these two trailers and it's actually a breath of fresh air to see the Muppets doing their type of humor, Id like to see a real trailer though.

Which is both obvious and completely beside the point.

Since it's an established part of the movie industry, it's completely relevant.

Yes, because when I think Muppets, I want to hear the earnest thoughts and feelings of reviewers, lest the movie going public see it as some kind of "zany", "silly" film, instead of the hard hitting melodrama it truly is.

Yes. Greatly.

Maybe I would've found the trailer funnier if I hadn't found that music so thoroughly unpleasant and irritating. But the whole thing just felt off to me.
It's off because it's not aimed at you. The advertisers already have you. They want the people younger than you.

If this movie is raunchy at all, I expect it will fall more in line with the raunchiness of "How I Met Your Mother" (of which Jason Segel is the star). And that's on freakin' CBS, so it's not that bad.

Oh my God, the Muppets are parodying a gay anthem, and using bloodthirsty, raping, pillaging brutes to do so! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!

And by the three lice of my first hat, here they are doing an homage to not only sex, but violence as well! THIS WILL NOT STAND! HOW DARE THEY TRY TO DESTROY THE MUPPETS LIKE THIS!

Now they've gone too far. There's nothing but horrible acts of the attempted murder of an innocent muppet for not liking a certain brand of coffee. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO THE MUPPETS! AIYEEEE!

I, for one, will be traveling back in time and boycotting the show from the very beginning.

I don't see how the target audience for this trailer and the target audience for the Muppets would overlap to any significant degree. The Hangover? From what I gather about that film (and presumably its sequel), it represents a far more crass brand of comedy than the Muppets.

Here's one, where it overlaps. I love The Hangover and I love the Muppets, one doesn't exclude the other. I like "raunchy and crass" (seriously?)... adult comedy as much as the "tame" variant... actually I don't know anyone who doesn't like both.

A couple of weeks ago while visiting my family my stepdad and I stayed up all night laughing at MTV Jackass reruns and I recently watched The Great Muppet Caper on TV, it does happen sometimes.

It's not like Muppet parodies are anything new, either.

Clearly, this movie is going to be a CGI fest about superheroes, isn't it?

:shifty:

Indeed, RUINED, RUINED, I mean just ruined the muppets....

In all seriousness....

"Ser harrew t'mer writtle frund." <flame>

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

And I have to agree, a sweedish track on the blueray would be hilarious, put it with the American Eagle guy and Beeker and your set for something almost as good as the movie.
