They're trying to tease me, but they're doing it in a way that leaves me unimpressed. I know parody has always been part of the Muppets' repertoire, but as I said, it's only been one small part of the whole. But too much modern film comedy seems to consist of nothing but lazy parodies of other current films, so as long as this ad campaign gives me nothing but that, it's doing nothing to convince me this film will be any better or more imaginative than those.
In fact, though, this trailer did make me laugh once, and it was when the Semel guy complained about the overuse of parody trailers and went on to do the "Swedish" line, an honest-to-gosh joke that wasn't just about "Hey, doesn't this remind you of that other thing you just saw?" So that, at least, was promising. I think it's the first actual laugh I've gotten from the ad campaign for this film, so hopefully that's a good sign about the film itself.
