Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode

At last! My most rewatched ENT episode, "Precious Cargo", is mine to be saved! I was worried that it would be saved by one of you other massive PC fans
I know it's derided - and I understand why in most cases - but I love it anyway. It's a fun bit of fluff, minor adventure with no real consequences/danger/drama, in which the cast look like they're enjoying themselves - especially in the 'tribunal' scene.
The visual of the Retellian freighter aproaching Enterprise at the beginning looks fantastic, as does Kaitaama's slinky dress, and the swampy jungle set at the end.
Extra points for getting Trip down to his undercrackers again

I truly could have done a whole spin-off of Agnes and Rios on the Stargazer, sad that is not in the cards...

I think Enterprise really should have had a main character who was gay - at the time it felt less progressive because they didn't.

Tell me about it! I was always driven particularly insane that they were more interested in having a character like Malcolm, whose blurb was basically "a man of no characteristics." Has there ever been a Trek character with less on the page than Malcolm?

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

This is another underrated gem, in an underrated season - two of my all-time favorites, rather, but that's not important right now. Computer viruses were new, and certainly new to a general populace - or any budding nerd, it's all good.

But in this case, the Ikonian system of probes can somehow reroute any computer system from any ol' ship passing by, without any knowledge of said system (or it's "AI" soooooo advanced that it can figure out something so complex that it can do so very quickly. Then again, there was a time when Blake's 7 had characters sifting through recorded video at 10,000FPS -- a frame rate seemed impossible in 1980 but is child's play in 2022.), is impressive enough, but it even includes its own code that self-activates once deposited indirectly from another system. Then again, note how your computer can bring up a JPG image and *ding* it's got a hidden payload that the renderer is clueless about. It's still a bit more complex, pardon that dreadfully geeky pun, but it's not implausible. Just very cleverly done, at least in Startrekland.

But don't think about all that just yet. The build-up of this episode's mystery and journey are so well done (a typical theme for the better season two episodes too, IMHO.) The introduction alone with the sister ship (one mentioned earlier in the show's run but now sports a new registry number), complete with explosion because - you know - in space, everything's a danger by default...

As the malware starts to rewrite ship systems, hijinx ensues. There's a particularly frightening turbolift ride for Geordi, and Picard is duly terrified by a replicated begonia, in front of "the boy, Wesley".

This is another episode that introduces something - set up with some thought behind it, in fact - this idea of a "warp core breach" requires a lot of issues to happen at just the right time. Sadly, later episodes would whip out those three words whenever the need for "DRAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" had to be used, just like at the special magazine and video store where Fred whips his credit card...

Go fig, the people who invented the probe system invented a teleporter, which can deposit you anywhere in a series of merry-go-round horses plot points destinations, even adding new ones for the Enterprise and Romulan ships' bridges by chance. A great scene, based solely on Picard's intuition, sells the notion the Ikonians were escaping a cataclysmic disaster - possible the wrong end of a war based on the amount of bombardment on the surface. Well, true, but did the Ikonians start a war and then the baddies came in retaliation, possibly due to the galactic phone booth they invented? Worf had a point... Picard is forced to use it, to discover the device (as he postulated to Data) was indeed one-way only and, whoops, he ended up on the Romulan ship.

Carolyn Seymour is truly fantastic as Commander Taris, whose name has nothing to do with Tardis.

This is definitely a must-see episode, even three+ decades later. The obvious issue of "restore from backup" is no longer new, but this is a show where they don't have seat belts either.

There are of course a million I could save. I'll go with one of the big classic's next: "Q Who"

For the Q/Guinan face-off!

I'd vote for it solely for Picard winning the wet T-shirt contest hosted in Engineering by incoming ensign Gomez to try to boost morale ("Oh, captain!"), but there is a ton in this story that hit all the right notes.

The spectre of "the unbeatable foe" trope is set up in this one. And set up marvelously, especially with the behind the scenes issues season 2 dealt with, some of which being for the best since the idea of Borg being big insects to eat everyone may or may not have landed as well, and was already done in Battlestar Galactica's pilot. Cybernetic beings hadn't*, and it's cheaper to glue a bunch of radiator grilles and aquarium filter tubing to a spandex one-piece...

Guinan gets some backstory, and with Q no less. It was never resolved in TNG, though the fact she makes a defensive posture by imitating a mountain lion is impressive.

The microbrain line was recycled, albeit to great effect, from "Home Soil".

John DeLancie apparently put in input into a key scene, where he listens to Picard rant and exasperates "Oh, puhleeze". The original intent was apparently for Q to be bellicose. This is an excellent change as it not only makes Q more menacing, it adds even more gravitas - this is not a mere trickster alien crossing Picard's path.

The Borg were said to be a parody of the Federation, since both had the same ideas - only the Federation did things differently. The Borg are also a parody of the Packrats Pakleds...

And last yet most important, why the heck are there food/drink replicators in Engineering? No worries, all the sensitive equipment bits are sealed and the membrane keyboards are clearly waterproof. So spill away! Also, didn't the membrane consoles remind anyone of this back in the day?

The UK had "Doctor Who" except anything to remind people that they were not robots but living organisms inside artificial bodies to replace worn-out squishy organs with had not been done too often (usually in the script, they were treated as robots or dudes in suits.) Whether the makers saw "Attack of the Cybermen", "Tomb of the Cybermen", or "The Tenth Planet" remains to be known, but given the number of Doctor Who "easter eggs" littered through the show's run, it's a possibility. But a small one; the Borg have more than enough innovations in concept and execution that they are their own thing.

Though the ending was a bit contrived, "The Siege" had some decent fight scenes, and some cool tricks by Odo. A worthy end to Trek's first official three-parter.

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

It's a terrific bit of high-concept sci-fi and meeting one's self, under the most dire of situations.

The only plausible explanation to the anomaly is Q causing this giant space tornado that is shown to have a distinct interest in Picard, and it's a shame Troi or anyone else doesn't really postulate it at the end. Maybe Q can shroud his presence as needed, since humanity's trial never ended and for Troi to point and yell "Sorry cap, it's Q again!" would damper the story too quickly. Even the ending tries to waltz around the issue:

PICARD: A lot of questions, Number One. Damn few answers.
RIKER: Maybe none of it was real. Perhaps we were all part of a shared illusion.
PICARD: Or maybe he was thrown back in time, so that we would be able to take another road. Make a different choice. Well, they say if you travel far enough you will eventually meet yourself. Having experienced that, Number One, it's not something I would care to repeat.
RIKER: I'll be on the Bridge, sir.

I think Picard "gets it" on a certain level, and for whatever reasons refuses to namedrop.

Picard realizes the issue at the last second and fixes the timeline by phasering his doppelganger, which breaks temporal continuity and the universe moves forward as it should. Hmmm, had he not, would we end up with a sequel with Picard dealing with three or three hundred doppelgangers? There's an idea for "Lower Decks" right there...

Remember kids, when something is out of phase, always just reverse/invert the setting - don't try to match the phase variant, as that might properly help instead. So when you're pumping a patient from another temporal plane with your stimulant and he goes into night-night sleepytime coma mode, don't do merely a sedative, it's not a direct 1:1 conversion... the same goes for powering the shuttle; it's not as much a negative charge but a balance that matches the phase shift. (Never mind that with all those sparks and the equipment still worked afterward, without the need of replacing a fuse and/or few dozen circuit boards?)
