Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode, 2025 Edition

My next save is from PRODIGY... "IS THERE IN BEAUTY NO TRUTH?".

This was simply an outstanding, beautiful episode. Quite probably THE best episode of the entire current era of the franchise. (2017-now.)

My last vote was for "Mirror, Mirror." I'll follow it up with a vote for one of that episode's more recent successors, PRO's "Cracked Mirror," a fascinating multi-universe hop that peaks with the crew and Chakotay actually making allies with Mirror Janeway. As an old J/Cer (who eventually just gave up on the pairing in VOY), I love everything implied about the couple here, especially the incendiary sparks between their MU counterparts. And it feels a little weird to notice it, but animated Chakotay is hot. Boy is seriously jacked.

Not to come across as two-faced, but...

Is an underrated gem.

Yep, it's another transporter accident plot, but it's thought up pretty well and executed even better, and with decent incidental music (unlike that slew of season six TNG episodes where, whoops, the teleporter tiddled* again and now people are swimming in the matter stream somehow or they turn into kids or rigging a repeating diagnostic loop to keep refreshing the memory buffer because no other way to keep the memory content's from being lost exited, now we have two Rikers and one of them has a dumb hairdo because being in a different division using red isn't enough for the audience to figure it out, etc...

Especially when Voyager's take on "The Odd Couple", Tuvok and Neelix, are the characters being forced together - literally, this time.

The result is one crewmember magically disappears but not in that cool Lucky Charms way, and the other is a pleasantly charming, lovely, warm, really cool person...

...whom Janeway risks murdering in a gamble to bring back The Odd Couple - In Space. Quite the moral dilemma, no? But it's a key to Janeway's mindset as she even went to gently misuse time travel in order to get her crew home safely sooner, especially when Tuvok was involved ("Endgame"). Had the gambit failed, what would she have done? Where's Tommy Boy Riker when we really need him, don't the ex-Maquis have his phone number on speed dial next to the pizza delivery service? Oh well... (Yeah, I'm ribbing just a teensy bit, but I really do love this story and I had to tie-in the "two-faced" bit above just that much more so it'd only be a half-empty cringe pun.)

Dang. Really. Just make a duplicate like Tommy Boy Riker was and then separate Tuvix. Heck, if there's a booboo, whip up some more Tuvix duplicates - you know, fake it until you make it! They all won't go over to the Maquis side! So glad that the EMH doesn't do his McCoy duplication of "I'm a Doctor, not a parrot!" in his two minutes of glory as well. Which is a neat little double-reminder, too:

Saving ENT: "Carbon Creek" because T'Pols story of first contact between Vulcans and Humans is rather touching, and I enjoy how she bamboozles Archer and Trip in the framing scenes. It's not the ENT episode I REALLY want to save (I'm sure I'll get my chance later), but I'd watch it now, even over a few of the remaining LDS, SNW, and DS9 eps. Plus, I believe it is objectively better.

I'm going to continue the TNG season 2 love by doing the unthinkable: I'm going to save "Shades of Gray." I don't think it is nearly as bad as people make it out to be. There are far, far, far worse Trek efforts. It only gets dinged because it is a clip show. However, I think it's a decent effort at a clip show, and it's also the final Pulaski episode, who I much prefer to Crusher.

I've been close to saving "Shades Of Gray" already. Since that's already taken care of, I'll now save "Manhunt." I love this one and I don't care what anyone says. I prefer Lwaxana in fun overbearing mode (as opposed to dramatic installments like "Half A Life", "Dark Page"...). The Riker/Troi chemistry is off the charts in this one. I love the weird fish people. I'm so into the Dixon Hill holodeck program. This episode gives me everything.

The ending proves that nonsensical scripting existed before the 2020s, but

otherwise has some inventive and engaging ideas that also features Wesley having to grow and learn as exposition via Riker and crew reveal. There's much to love in this outing, but one thing that does it a massive disservice. But I'll bleat later.

If nothing before, this is Dr Pulaski's breakout episode as she finally sees reason to respect him, given the gravity of the situation and his desire to save this entire species - a direct counter to her belief that he is nothing more than a mass of emotionless and soulless circuits on robot legs, arms, a fully-functional floppy drive, and other things, that wouldn't give a jot either way if a billion, million, and/or a thousand or one dies. Especially as she's trained to save lives and all that.

The prime directive discussion is simply one of the best IMHO, or at least most thoughtful as Picard gets to whip out his ace card in doing so as to reasons why the prime directive exists. But ace or not, TOS and other spinoffs would go against the grain if they felt the need was there and significant enough.

I also like how they use the "cosmic plan" theorizing, for which Riker makes a salient point.

But that episode's ending honestly makes no sense, threatening a derailing of an otherwise robust episode and we're still a while off from the expanded universe novels that can play "clean up on aisle three" where various storylines were left disastrously open-ended. But I digress; they don't want to fetter Sarjenka with knowledge of their existence, for her benefit, since nobody around her would believe her - among other repercussions. So they mindwipe her, but then Data decides to risk all by leaving behind that magical singy conch thing that Sarjenka adored. Yes, that's sweet. Yes, that's also incredibly antithetical to the biggest issues posited in the story, doubling down on contamination of the species by this magical singy thing that popped out of nowhere. Even Dr Pulaski would object, and you know she's bound to ask Data where the singy conch is and why they now have to go back to get it before anything spirals out of control. No worries, there's that expanded universe novel that has a happy ending for all this, but still.

Yes, the clips were not ideal - regarding both in-story narrative and for season production issues. But beyond the clips, this is a suitably eerie sci-fi yarn that reminds that not all alien planets are chock full of colonies with squabbles and petty bickerings. Real unknowns in environment and lifeforms, something that successfully sold the idea of dangerous mystery once before (TSFS). Even the incidental music alone nails the suspense, but the design of the jungle set was magnificent no less. Trouble is, there wasn't enough time or plotting to have everyone wandering around getting snagged by spiny root things, so stretching out the "will he or won't he" regarding Riker's infection was the only thing left. Plus, they'd already lost out 4 episodes due to the writers' strike. Having 5 lost would be worse. Even this one, but they made lemonade out of lemons the best they could and, yeah, the "it's a clip shown" told in derision is the biggest thing. And clip shows were somewhat ubiquitous in the 1980s.
