Game The Most Disliked First Season Episode

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked. :bolian:

THE RULES: Below is a list of 1st season episodes from every Trek series. (It is extremely long! :bolian:)

Eliminate/save a favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Well, the 3rd season list was an experiment in "does the game even work with a list this long?" And it did! And then the 2nd season list was the same experiment again, and it also worked! So let's see if it continues to work even with a list this long... I'm optimistic.

I was anticipating a lot of cut-and-paste errors with the season 3 game (generally speaking, the longer the list the higher the error rate), but somehow there really weren't many (or any?). Lets see if that streak continues, but if errors do crop up, that's fine, we'll just correct them as we go along. It's hard to avoid with this many items. :bolian:

And I'll start by saving... oh god so many candidates... let's do "The Big Goodbye." This episodes stock was down with me for a bit, but I've recently become charmed by it again, and it is one of my Most Watched Trek Episodes. In fact, there was like a decade where "The Big Goodbye" was the only Trek I watched... every summer I'd rewatch it some night, it was an odd ritual.

Apologies in advance for any stupid, sleep-deprived mistakes I make, which may be more frequent with this cold that I can't shift. :scream:

I still think that TOS's first season was the best one in the whole franchise, with lots of great cast, some classic episodes, and just a general sense of wonderment, but also danger. Additionally, the music kicks arse. :techman:

The City on the Edge of Forever is a beautifully told story and is my first save. I always get really swept into the whole drama of Kirk needing to let Edith die. The period soundtrack is awesome, too.

There are many things I love about "Angel One", including seeing Dr Crusher being a doctor and everyone except Picard has a lot to do.

"Eye Of The Needle" - I love that they think they've found a way home but gradually realise more and more reasons why it won't work, finishing with Tuvok's reveal at the end that their messages probably didn't make it to their families. It's an episode concept that works really well very early in the show. And it makes you wonder: who was the Romulan spy on Voyager? The Tal Shiar must have found out about Voyager's messages and they could have put an agent on Voyager who could send them a lot of intel about Starfleet technology.

An odd personal favorite since the script is completely dreadful at times, but

TNG: "Datalore"​

The wheat and egg of the cake may be a bit off, like how you don't make clam and limburger-flavored pastries, but - dayum - that mint frosting is sooooo good! A visual story still is more than the sum of its parts, and even though the basic idea of "evil twin" was sorta cliche, there's a real spark of life where it was needed.

Brent Spiner just excels as the vicious psychopathic Lore. I know playing villains is more fun, but Brent takes it to a higher plane, and it's genuinely rare when watching someone so psycho is actually fun.

The music is almost too good.

The direction, set lighting, and camerawork are nothing less than brilliant.

"No Small Parts" is crazy good. I'm always going on about it. I'd actually say it's the best season one finale of any Trek series, by a mile. (Well, Prodigy isn't that far behind, then it's the other 10 that are a mile behind those two) It was so thrilling to discover the first time. I had imagined Lower Decks would be a fun show, but I had no idea it would be capable of reaching the heights it does.

Such a long list! I'm not even bothering to try and find the single one I like best of all of these, just eliminating an episode I like well enough, and that I would certainly eliminate, if not now, then in the early middle phase at the latest.

VOY: Cathexis.

A nice, suspenseful episode where no-one can be trusted and it only gradually becomes clear what the hell is going on.

Also I've never been bored by rewatching it. Still excellent entertainment value.
