Right, I'll go for A Simple investigation next. A nice little performance and Auberjonois is great in the role as usual in this ROTW.

Nowhere near the worst of S5.

Voting for "A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION" this round.

Only one season 5 episode really deserved to be in the Finals, and this definitely wasn't it. Auberjonois, as always, brought his 'A' game. It's also not a bad episode, either.

(In fact, I think very few on this list are actually bad episodes. A couple boring ones, yes, but even a list like this shows DS9 turned in good quality far more often than not.)

I'll go with "A Simple Investigation", only because on my most recent rewatch, I noticed for the first time that in the scene where Odo and Arissa are in bed, we hear the Odo morphing effect (happening somewhere below the mid-chest level, we can't see whatever is morphing), and just a moment later Arissa suddenly tosses back her head in pleasure and CUT.

It's so much dirtier than I ever noticed before!

My only real complaint about "A SIMPLE INVESTIGATION" is I think it would have been a little more effective for Odo's character if it occured while he was a solid. One of the rare occasions where placement in the season production of an episode would actually have made a difference.

I so agree. This episode, staged when Odo was human, could have been one of the all-time greats.

It has that elusive element that Trek ROTW's need to be effective - justification for how the relationship gets so deep so fast. Odo as a human suddenly, that should have been so intense and destabilizing and hormonal. Totally explains how he could fall in love in an instant, like a teenager.

But, the version we got is fine, I guess.
 
Sorry, I was going to vote for "Babel" again, but I rewatched "The Emperor's New Cloak" in my head as I read its Memory Alpha page as a reminder, and found myself laughing (mostly with, but occasionally at). Quark and Rom with the cloaking device in the corridor (sounds like Clue!) were the main culprits, but Regent Worf is in there too. When I think about the other episodes on the list, they all seem dull in comparison (some FAR more than others even without the comparison), so I'm giving this vote to "THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOAK" :klingon: :cardie: :rommie:

Well, seasons 4 and 5 are completely safe, so now I actually have to think about my choices... slightly.

My vote this round goes to "PROPHET MOTIVE".

A fun first directing for Auberjonois, it's a fun episode overall. Definitely not bad or boring.

And the B story was good. AND the first time we see the dartboard. That alone deserves a save.

I just rewatched "Prophet Motive" and had fun with it. Better than I remembered.

Such a clever way to reintroduce the Prophets to the series for the first time since "Emissary."

I also like the weird self-indulgence of the Bashir subplot.

My vote this round is for "THE NAGUS".

It gave us Wallace Shawn as Zek. That alone is a good reason.

But a bonus reason... Jake teaching Nog to read. That was just so heartwarming. And Sisko watching. You can feel how proud he is of Jake. And how this episode really shows him there is a true bond between them. That story always makes me smile.
