A daring episode, if not imperfect...
TNG: "The Host"
While DS9 would be quick to retcon the "we can't use transporters" shtick as well as being one of 59856985469875648975^42 examples of Trek altering its canon whenever a good and/or cheap reason is needed, this episode quickly proved why as all that ersatz "tension" over the shuttle ride and imminent daaaaaaaaaaaanger was scribbled off way too fast. Really poor pacing... if nothing else.
The setup of Riker as intermediary host tries to set up a rather different point, which is an interesting one - if nothing else. It shows, or tries to, some differences between lust and love and if the two can coalesce... or not... I didn't quite believe she really wanted to overlook Riker's body when thinking about the personality stuck in an oversized aquarium hermit crab for every time it wants a shiny new shell to cozy up with.
The episode also tries hard to be a LGBT allegory. But, if nothing else, Beverly just can't put love above lust when the trill's new host arrives and, you guessed it, the new body has lady parts instead of the various man parts she's used to. She's not obligated to try and thankfully she got burned out on body swapping thanks to Riker... I've seen far worse, in terms of allegory or love stories with sad twists that don't feel genuine; I do feel it is the character of Crusher on display rather than anything else. Even people of their own orientation don't fall for lust for everyone within the same orientation, so why would it be different for any other? (Being bi, it's double the un-fun, but it's something everyone can and does experience at some point, the concept of romantic rejection. TNG's handling of this is not ideally realized, but it's not a total dud either.)
