[Brian]

VINA: He's not bluffing, Captain. With illusion they can make your crew work the wrong controls or push any button it takes to destroy your ship.

 

[LeadHead]

Pike: I'm going to gamble you're too intelligent to kill for no reason at all.

Pike hands Keeper to Number One, then fires Phase Pistols at Glass Wall

On the other hand, I've got a reason. I'm willing to bet you've created an illusion this laser is empty. I think it just blasted a hole in that window and you're keeping me from seeing it. You want me to test my theory out on your head?

 

[Brian]

COLT: Captain.
(indicating hole in glass... they leave the cell)

 

[LeadHead]

Screen goes blank

Mendez: It seems the Talosians have deserted you.

 

[Leandar]

Spock: Gentlemen, a moment please.

 

[CoveTom]

KIRK: Well, Mr. Spock?

 

[LeadHead]

Mendez: May I have your verdict?

 

[Orac]

Spock: Signal you want them to wait. Captain, please, it's your life now, at least a chance for life.

 

[CoveTom]

KIRK: You keep talking about life, Mr. Spock. A chance for life. How? As a prisoner, caged -- a zoo specimen -- living the illusions that amuse his keepers?

 

[LeadHead]

Spock: No Captain. There's more to it. Watch.

 

[Orac]

Mendez: Guilty, yes or no Captain?

 

[Leandar]

(Pike beeps "yes," signaling guilty)

Mendez: Yes. I must also vote guilty as charged. And you, Captain?

 

[scotpens]

KIRK: Guilty as charged.

 

[LeadHead]

Hansen: Bridge to Commander.

 

[Brian]

MENDEZ: Mendez here.

 

[Leandar]

Mendez: Sir, we are entering orbit, Talos IV.

 

[Brian]

SPOCK: Talos controls the vessel now, sir, as they did thirteen years ago. You've asked me why. You'll see the answer now.

[commentary] I always wondered how he knew that. Were the Talosians "whispering in his ear" or something? [/commentary]

 

[Leandar]

^^^Because this had all been arranged previously between the Talosians and Spock.^^^

(On the screen, on the surface, the Talosian elevator comes to the top and the knoll has indeed been blasted away by the phaser turret.)

Pike: Make contact, Number One.

 

[Brian]

NUMBER ONE: They kept us from seeing this, too. We cut through and never knew it. Captain.

[commentary] Even that they would cut the transmission and leave Spock hanging, but would resume transmission once the ship entered orbit? They could have just timed the playback better so that everything was revealed just as the ship reached the planet, and not had to resort to having the Mendez avatar go through the delaying tactic of a vote.)
