@Ghost in the Machine this is the current government of my province of birth doing this atrocity. And to my perception, "atrocity" is the best word to describe that legislation. This is why Trudeau the Elder was so uncomfortable with the Notwithstanding Clause being installed in the Charter to begin with: he saw things like this in the works. If not the generation of premiers he was working with at that time, then he expected it to happen after his generation was off the political stage.

This is Scott Moe setting up horror stories for the future of Saskatchewan in particular and Canada in general.

Well said.

It looks great, but unfortunately it's only available on Hulu and I can't really afford another streaming service. :(

I know the feeling. I feel the same way about other services, particularly because as a whole they've become fairly expensive. Here's hoping it will make its way to some FAST channels eventually, say Tubi for example.

This is probably the stupidest thing that you all have ever heard in your life, so if that's so, I do apologize. Anyhoo...

Exactly how do Canadians prnounce the word "radiator"?

The reason I ask this is because whenever I watch The Red Green Show, Red always pronounces it "RADD-iator." (Down here, we say "RAY-diator.") Often Red would mention using "radd hoses" in a project and I had no idea what he was talking about. :guffaw:

Is this just sort of local slang, or do all Canadians say it that way?

(See, I told you it was stupid. )

Probably based on some regional pronunciation that became a bit of a stereotype for the whole nation. I say RAY- diator.

Red Green probably has a reading disability, or a teacher never corrected him.

It's RAY-diator.

I say RAY-diator too. (Well, when I say it at all. I haven't been in a house heated by radiators since my grandparents were alive.)

I mean, if it's RAY-diation and RAY-diate, then RAY-diator just makes sense, right?

But OK @Mr. Laser Beam , here's one for you! I may have mentioned in the past that I work for a multinational, so I probably end up talking to more non-Canadians at work than I do Canadians. Most times, when I talk to American colleagues, they pronounce things the same way I do. But every once in a while, they throw out a pronunciation that sends me for a loop. Sometimes I don't even understand what they're saying at first, and need to wait to pick it up through the context of the discussion.

One of the most egregious ones that I've heard, is that a number of Americans seem to pronounce the word "roof" like "ruff". WTH is up with that?

I first noticed roof, ruff watching Home Improvement in the 90's. It still stands out so much for me.

Got a (robo)call from Pierre Poilievre today, inviting me to a local "Axe the Tax" rally. He is apparently referring to himself now as "the common sense Conservative leader". Sorry, is it "common sense" that caused you to be a vaccine mandate-opposing, convoy-supporting instigator? Thanks, but no thanks.

I still wear a mask when I'm in public places anyway. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be welcome at your little rally.

I get the odd robocall from a couple of UCP cabinet ministers here in Alberta, about some phone "town hall" thing. I just hang up because the only cabinet minister I'd want to tell off would be Adriana LaGrange (who's proving to be every bit as incompetent a health minister as she was an education minister).

The UCP do a hell of a lot of "announcing" and not much "doing". I've been blocked from Rachel Notley (opposition leader)'s FB page and finally wrote to her deputy leader to ask for help in getting unblocked. Then I got an email from someone who suggested it was I who blocked Notley.

It's total bullshit. I've blocked people who comment on her page, particularly the spambots, but not Notley herself.

Now I have no idea how to even find my list of blocked people on FB.

Profit up 11%, revenue only up 5%.

"it's inflation we aren't making any money."

^ You don't have Kroger up there, do you? (That's my store.)

Not to my knowledge but maybe in different areas.

Yeah, I don't think they're up here at all, but definitely not in my area, at least.

The major players in my area are:
  • Metro
  • Sobey's
  • Loblaws (and Real Canadian Superstore, who are the same corporate family)
And then there are all the "discount" grocery stores: No Frills, FreshCo, Food Basics, Valu Mart... all of which are owned by one of the big three mentioned above.

And all of this to say... I buy my groceries at Walmart, because their later hours are more friendly to my schedule. (Although with their recent cutback, they now close at the same time as Metro, but they still beat Metro on price, so....)

in my neck of the woods I've the majority of shopping I've done has been with wal-mart. I have wal-mart, freshco, sobeys and metro within a 3.5Km radius.

Metro and Sobeys are ouch on the prices though I visit them on my way back from the gym to get work lunches for my wife and occasionally they have things that I can't find elsewhere (hello maple coke, Maskocka Cream Ale). The Freshco is small and seems to have major stock control issues. No frills is okay but have the stuff like shampoo and razor blades in the pharmacy section and seem to take their pricing from shoppers. That leaves wal-mart which on occasions has it's stock issues (and where are my hot cross buns you bastards - really liked the wally world ones).

It's just a 2.5Km walk each way and even with my little red wagon can be a pain to get things home. A city bus used to go in there was and stopped right outside my building but then the former mayor and some councillers utterly fucked up transit with route changes and took it out.

Though last week I did something I've never done before - my grocery order was done online and delivered from the store the next day. Cost me $13 inc tip which is about is bit less than a 1 way taxi trip.

as to pierre pissant and his carping on about inflation and food prices, we haven't actually heard anything that resembles a plan from him.

he's demanding the goverment do something but could you imaging the outrage is the intervened directly? the tories would squeal like stuck pigs about "socialism".

and I saw the cut to carbon tax on heating oil labelled as a political stunt yet when the ford govt continue the suspension of the provincial fuel tax, there was nary a peep.

pissant could call on other provinces to follow the Ontario lead (after alberta is the only one that doesn't) but he's not doing that.

maybe the government could stop the subisidies to the fossil fuel sector which cost tax payers billions (and that's before we touch on them getting away with murder in Alberta and dodging billions in clean up costs) and futher pump the money into clean energy etc.

Freshco is my main go-to but I might be switching to either No Frills (despite hating the conglomerate) or Food Basics because I moved and they are now closer.

However, I live close to a butcher school and now have a freezer so plan on taking advantage of their bulk sales now that I can store them - assuming I can get in an order before they sell out. The cuts are sometimes a little off and the meat isn't the high quality from a butcher shop but it's fine and noticeably cheaper than grocery stores. They have a case, but those prices are normal, it's the one off "10 lbs of ground beef $45" where you save. They also do big collections for $200 which work out to be $5-$7/lbs of whatever they did a lot of class.

Don't forget Dollorama in the list of grocery stores. It's where Galen really milks people and is driving a lot of profit. Smaller quantities with overall costs less than the grocery store but higher per gram mark ups than the stores. People can't afford it in a normal grocery store, go to the Dollorama and pay less total overall for one trip, but more overall in the long-term shopping from them, and more profit for Loblaws.
