Torontonians are right. Since Khan is from there, and he's the key to creation of the Federation, and the spot to stop him is as a child in Toronto, the city really is the center of the universe.

Touché! :guffaw:

It was nice to see that it was unabashedly Toronto, and called out as such. I had seen the set photos from back when the episode filmed, but assumed they were just going to use Toronto to "play" an American city, as so many shows/movies do. (But I did think it was hilarious that Kirk basically lampshaded that practice! )

Only two things I didn't really like about it:
  • "in what was formerly known as Canada"... what is it called now? I had got the impression from other shows that it was still called that? Didn't they reference that specifically in TNG: Lower Decks?
  • I'm not sure how I feel about the tyrant Khan Noonien-Singh being Canadian!
Well, anyway, Happy Khanada Day, all!

About that first bit:

Canada obviously still exists in Trek. There have been too many instances of it being CALLED Canada to simply dismiss. So La'an was probably just bad at history.

Individual nation-states still exist. When United Earth was formed, they became part of that greater whole. So that's exactly what this is.

So, this year's Canada Day celebrations in my area feel a bit like a sellout. For the first time I can remember, they're actually charging for the event, when all previous years have been free for everyone and it's not cheap at $70-$85 a ticket. Tom Cochrane is performing. I'd love to see him, but not on what is supposed to be a day of celebration like this.

Bad at history, maybe, but better at geography? Granted that La'an had a big clue in the "CF Toronto Eaton Centre" banner there, but the fact that she knew enough to explain the difference between Toronto and NYC to alt-Kirk tells me that there's another story about La'an to be told as well as the one that threw me.

Speaking of this episode, I do have a question about one of the early scenes...

So when they first walk into Yonge-Dundas Square, Kirk misidentifies it as NYC, and then La'an corrects him. When Kirk appears confused, La'an elaborates with "The biggest city in what used to be called Canada? You know, maple leaves, politeness, poutine." She then makes a gesture indicating that Kirk should look up, and to La'an's left.

And Kirk obligingly looks.

But they never really show what it is Kirk is supposed to be looking at. They then cut back to the wide shot, with Kirk still looking...

But what is it that Kirk is looking at? I'm assuming that it's supposed to be something that reinforces what La'an was just mentioning, and is therefore supposed to be something uniquely or stereotypically Canadian.

At first I thought it was maybe supposed to be the beer ad, since that's something stereotypically Canadian. But I think that's too far behind Kirk to see well at the angle he's looking. (And if I'm interpreting the blurry background correctly, the second image above supports this.) But it doesn't appear that he's looking at the news display over the Eaton's Centre entrance, either.

So does anyone have any idea what La'an was gesturing at? Was there supposed to be something added in post that didn't get added? I know it's not really important in the grand scheme of the episode, but I'm really curious!

Just for fun, I tried to see if I could find a RL image from Yonge-Dundas Square that matched the angle in the wide shot above. I think this was the best one I could find.

And it must even be from the same general timeframe, too, because the locations in the building on the right seem to match what is shown in the episode, and that certainly wasn't the case for all the images I found!

The "Toronto Eaton Centre" signage, and the newsboard above it?

Timothy Peel has confirmed working on digital substitutions for some of the signage that were added in post-production to either reduce legal exposure, establish plot points or both.

and probably doesn't tie things to a particular time/date thought not sure about the LTT image.

I think you may be right. I originally dismissed that, because the angles seemed off in the image I posted. But I'm thinking now that's just a perspective thing, as there is another wide shot a bit later from a different angle, and the entrance does seem to be more directly to La'an's left.

Makes sense, I think that's fairly common to digitally replace real ads in shots like those? I think pretty much all the ads in the shot are fake. Or at least I couldn't find any Google results for any of them (except for the Memory Alpha hits that now appear! ):

- Propritrolix
- Underbelly Bourbon
- Dr. Keeler (other than real doctors with that name, but not as a business)
- Three Eyed Goat (as a beer, anyway)
- DiCharri

I can't make out the name on the ad to the left of the DiCharri ad, but based on the design cues, it seems like another drug ad?

The one that says "This Train is Bound for Blood", I assume is a fake movie ad?

And of course the big news screen atop the Eaton Centre entrance, which I believe IRL is just a regular ad space? It looks like they copied the CP24 design, but obviously can't call it that, and instead called it the generic "Greater Toronto Newscast".

Interestingly, I think we saw a portion of the real ad that was replaced by the "Dr. Keeler" ad in two closeups. The first was when La'an was going through the "maple leaves, politeness..." bit, and then again when Kirk looks up, just before it cuts back to the wide shot (where it is immediately back to a Dr. Keeler ad). We only see a portion of the screen, and it's out of focus, so they might have figured it wasn't worth the effort, since we couldn't tell what the original was for anyway. In all other shots both wide and closeup, they seem to have replaced it.

They also replaced the CIBC logo on top of the taller building in the centre of the frame.

not sure about the LTT image

LTT? (Tried Googling, but none of the suggestions seem relevant.)

the guy with beard on the screen is Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips out of B.C who has a massive YouTube viewer base (15million subscribers).

He was recently offer $100mil for his media group and turned it down (and not because he wanted more money).

Throwing on Slings & Arrows in the background while I work before I go watch a play at Stratford in two weeks.

@Timewalker, I waved north every day I’ve been in Calgary. :)
I waved at you when I was on the bus (the WRONG bus, it turned out :scream: ) from the airport, and every day when I left my hotel and headed towards the C-train!

I wish I'd known you were going - I'd have recommended a visit to The Sentry Box (best book/gaming store in Alberta, for folks into science fiction, fantasy, gaming, historical re-enactment, etc.).

I've never actually been to the Calgary Stampede.

I've been to the Ponoka Stampede, which is much smaller, but still has the basics. I remember asking my dad to go on the rides with me, since rodeo isn't something I'm into, and he said he would if I'd go on the Ferris wheel.

He figured I'd chicken out from a fear of heights, but I told him I'd do it. So we went on rides that day, and it's not like he couldn't get his fill of rodeo at the Westerner (Red Deer's summer fair/rodeo).

Honestly, to me it's like if you've seen one pony chuckwagon race, you've seen them all - and far too many horses get injured/die in those.
