The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

That's not news.
It might be. The post-RotJ movie we'd heard about before was supposed to be a big crossover, and to be directed by Filoni. It's possible the (awful) title is misleading, and that Filoni and Favreau switched roles, but from what little we know, this sounds like a separate project.

The bottom of the article says Filoni's movie is still coming.

"The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead Lucasfilm's ongoing feature-development slate, including films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also currently developing Ahsoka Season 2, among those in the works."

Also confirms Ahsoka Season 2 is a thing.

I just found it hard to believe they would do both a Filoniverse movie AND a Mandalorian movie. This after no movies at all for years.

I agree that this sounds like a separate project. So I guess no season 4 then. I remember before the writers strike there was talk that season 4 was already written so they could get it in the can by the end of 2023. Then the actors strike happened. Maybe this also has to do with the disney shift to a more movie focused mind. But still it's weird that Filoni's movie is supposed to be the film that ties up everything. Maybe this will be a standalone smaller movie....

Those poor filler episodes... they never stood a chance!

Dateline is claiming Season 4 is still a thing, but that could just be them saying that because no-one from LucasFilm has said otherwise.

Mando could go the big screen for a movie and still return to television for another season. X-Files did.
Yeah, in this day and age especially, I see no reason why the two need to be mutually exclusive.

I just hope they approach this with a sensibly modest budget, realistic box office expectations, and a solid promotional campaign. Nobody should be going into this expecting a billion return on the investment.

"Hey guys, let's make another movie that requires you to watch dozens of episodes of TV in order to understand it. It worked so well for 'The Marvels' after all!"

Not expecting Force Awakens numbers, but should do quite good if done right. Kinda happy the filler episodes are gone!

Given that theaters project everything digitally anyway, there's no technological reason they couldn't screen all Disney+ episodes in theaters, in bundles of two or three per show. The deciding factor, therefore, is hype.

If, as seems to be the case, the plan is still to do a Mando and Friends vs. Thrawn team-up movie, the question then becomes how best to build up hype for the same. Bringing Din to theaters sounds like a way to give him big-screen cred, which would then contribute to hype for the Thrawn movie. The likelihood of a Mando S4 in between the solo movie and the Thrawn movie therefore strikes me as slim. (After the Thrawn flick, who knows.)

Myself, I skipped Mando S3, in large part because I got tired of a show in which the main character's face was only rarely shown. I also question whether general audiences will tolerate that - what works for a forty-minute episode doesn't necessarily work for a feature film. (Just ask the makers of Dredd.) And the fact that the official announcement doesn't mention Pascal doesn't instill much optimism that his face will get much screen time.

Season 3 was probably the best of the series thus far. Din is far more interesting with his helmet on then when he has it off but him acting as a rallying force for disparate elements like Fett, Bo Katan, Greef and Ahsoka would be a fun team up I would be all in on.
