The Legend of Korra: Book 3

That scene where where Zaheer and P'li were making out and Earthbender guy (who's name escapes me at the moment) is all "really, right now" was hilarious. The Benderhood really do seem like a group of close friends who would sit down and have a beer together when they're not kicking ass or trying to kidnap young girls. I do think that their ultimate goal will be more complicated than we think, or at least Zaheer's goal. LOK seems to be going for the "morally ambiguous" vibe more than the original show did. Even the villains, well except for Unalaq, raise some legitimate points about society.

How does the ability of combustion work? Babies can't be born with the tattoo, can they? And who would have invented the use of the tattoo to channel chi for combustion?

That's what I think it is. They're born with that particular ability and the tattoo is there to help them control/focus it.

Two more excellent episodes. I found the first season underwhelming, but everything since then has been amazing. Now I must have an internal debate with myself if Korra is actually better than A:TLA!!!

I feel like an idiot. I actually didn't have a clue that the new bald airbender was the bad guy until like the third scene

I thought it was a little artificial that he was able to beat Kya like that. She's been water bending her entire life and she's Aang's daughter. He just got his powers a few weeks ago. I wish that fight had been more about him desperately trying to escape rather than actually beating her.

His name is Ghazan (played by Peter Giles).

I guess the intent is to show that he's an exceptionally gifted warrior. After all, he has to be able to pose a credible threat to the Avatar herself.

Not to mention that Kya has no experience fighting against an airbender in earnest. I'm sure she's had decades' worth of brawls with Tenzin, and with Aang when he was alive/around, but they were never actually trying to hurt or kill her. Really, I've been thinking ever since A:TLA that airbenders have a natural advantage over any other fighter in the "present-day" Avatar world, because hardly anybody alive has had any direct experience fighting airbenders. Not to mention that Zaheer's approach to airbending is more forceful and aggressive than the usual defensive, evasive style of the Air Nomads, so there'd really be nobody in the world who has any experience contending with his particular fighting style. So they wouldn't know how to defend against him or what weaknesses he had.

Anyway, I'm LOVING this season so far, much more than I liked the previous two. Can't wait for more.
Either the showrunners said that they wanted to make this season more like The Last Airbender or fans pointed out that it's more like that show. I don't remember which. Either way, it does feel like TLA. Things are really moving along at a good pace and the old world is still very much alive outside of Republic City.

How does the ability of combustion work? Babies can't be born with the tattoo, can they? And who would have invented the use of the tattoo to channel chi for combustion?
I figured that the third eye blast was just another learned skill like blood bending or metal bending and the tattoo was just decoration. Maybe they're part of an order that uses the tattoo or maybe this woman decided to emulate either the previous combustion man or someone like him. Maybe they're related. Who knows.

About Zaheer... He looks a lot younger without the long gray hair and the beard.

So, five episodes in now and the release of the spirit world still seems to be contained only to Republic City...

Or maybe other places have adapted better than Republic City. It'd be like if the doors to the spirit world opened up and big vines appeared in... New York. In the US Midwest, it wouldn't be such a big deal...

^Out in the wilderness perhaps, but it'd wreak all kinds of hell in farmlands, to say nothing of what it'd do to the major roads.

What I meant was that the whole area is a bit more spread out. Yeah, it'd be a pain in Cincinnati, but out in the wilds of Wyoming... not such a problem.

But that does raise the question of why there aren't any spirits in Ba Sing Se. Maybe all the negative vibes from the Earth Queen's oppression have driven them off. But it would be nice if the show would address the question, at least. We've seen nothing of the spiritual aftermath beyond the first episode.

I really enjoyed Friday's episodes. The rescue of Kai and the other airbenders was fun. I also liked getting to see what was going on with the new airbender's who did go back to Air Temple Island.
The stuff in the Metal City was good too. I liked getting to learn more about Lin and finding out what's happened to Toph since ATLA. I liked the family, and I really hope that Opal, at least, sticks around beyond Team Avatar's time in the Zaofu.

Am I the only one who's sympathetic to Lin's obstinacy? Suyin is the one has refused to tell the whole truth, slowed Korra's search for more airbenders, and harbored Varrick. I say Lin is justified to refuse closer relations with Suyin.

Do we know that Suyin has hidden the truth about something? And given that Lin lied to Korra about having family there at all, she's not blameless herself.

Besides, whatever Suyin may have done, that's no excuse for taking it out on Opal -- or on poor Naga with the ball.
