The lack of realism in star trek is seriously insulting

Sexy Human

Lieutenant
I am a big fan. I loved The Next Generation, and I enjoyed a lot of the Deep Space Nine and Voyager episodes even though a lot of them were really cheesy. I have always loved astronomy, science, fiction and such so I have been willing to tolerate the cheesiness...

But the lack of realism is just too much. They all get an ungodly amount of luck every time. How many close calls? How many time travels? Battles that they win because their opponents are incompetent and conveniently are unable to finish them off every time.

Obviously I understand that its made for entertainment and this has to be this way... but does this ever bother anyone else? For example I like what they did in season 1 of TNG by killing off Tasha Yar. A casualty of a main character makes for realism....

I guess what Im saying is I would like to see more realism. Its just too easy. Also all the inconsistencies are seriously laughable.

They should kill the mains off with alarming regularity like on Lost. That was realistic.

Just look at the Borg. They wrote an adversary so powerful that the only way they can have another episode of Star Trek the next week is by deliberately making them too incompetent to live. Every single time.

Voyager, I'm glaring at you.

Isn't the title an oxymoron? It's science FICTION. It's not supposed to be real. If you have trouble with suspension of belief ( or however that phrase goes) then maybe you shouldn't be watching Trek

Maybe you guys havent seen all the episodes and movies. Its really kind of a joke.

They should travel back in time and play the lottery. They would win every time.

Cant say it bothers me to much, especially since actual realism would be kind of boring.

Yes, we've never seen a single movie or episode of the franchise this site is dedicated to.:guffaw:

I like having a cast of characters that sticks around more or less intact from beginning to end. Every time I've seen a show turn over a majority of the cast, it's almost always lost my interest.

That said, offing the occasional unpopular, underutilized, or uninteresting character is a natural and healthy thing to do.

People can ask for more realism in their fiction. It's just we've had 45 years of this universe with the realism pretty much consistent cross the board. We've never had a Trek show or movie that decided to go for some HBO realism thing. It is what it is. And I certainly don't find this "insulting".

Realism is a poor choice of word in a science fiction venue.

Consistency or plausibility would be better. But given the week to week episode format of the show, the reset button is quite often employed. It's just the nature of the beast.

Yes that nails it. If the thread was about consistency it might have generated a bitch session

Where IS that borg baby?

I don't think consistency of the the plots is necessary in such a long running series. The fairy story that everyone resets back to the normal configuration after every episode means that with the two exceptions mentioned, nobody ever took the 'peril du jour' seriously.

Let's face it, if you went through half of what Our Heroes endure you'd be a psychological wreck and spend the rest of your life in a special center on Risa.

The evil Janeway theory provides an answer yet again. She -ate- it! What else do you think Neelix has that ten gallon pot for?

Well DS9... and as much as I hate to say... Enterprise, had their characters get on the edge of snapping towards the end of their story arcs given all the crap they had been through.

Well as others have said, it's fiction so we have to accept a certain amount of unreleastic things.

As others have already said it's more about being internally consistant, some shows made rather liberal use of the reset button (VOY) whilst other Trek shows had a bit more consistancy (DSN)
