The Kira Nerys LOVE thread!

dub

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Kira Nerys. A character with such incredible beauty deserves an appreciation thread! Her eyes, her smile, her strength, her vulnerability, her heart, and even the "wrinkles in her nose." :) She's a beautiful character. And beyond Kira, Nana's other roles on the series were just as charming. Go ahead, share your love for my favorite Trek character! Explain why she is so awesome! ;)

She was definitely my favorite, even though she didn't do herself any favors my playing "Annnnnngry!!!" as her initial character note. I loved how mature and complex she was played by the end. Still hate the Odo romance though. But even then, she didn't play their parting as pathos, it was "just how things are."

I didn't even dislike the 'Angry' part at the beginning. It pretty much only lasted through the pilot. Given her established backstory if she didn't start off angry and anti-Federation it wouldn't fit her character. She needed to start out that way to increase the impact when she grew away from it.

Battle Lines and Duet really fleshed out her character nicely and placed the anger in a much more interesting context.

She is the best character in Trek, a belief I will take to my grave!

The fact she wasn't Starfleet immediately gave her a different perspective and motivation, about rebuilding her home not out to explore. She was a patriot who would stand up and fight for what suited Bajor best and wasn't intimidated by Starfleet or Sisko, having the balls to stand up and argue with him when she felt her cause was just—even though he was a major religious icon to her. Their relationship over time went from adversarial to one of mutual respect and then to friendship, with her becoming one of his strongest ‘supporters’ on board making sure his orders were followed.

Her backstory was intricate, tragic and traumatic, leaving her mentally and emotionally scarred with a deep hatred for the Cardassians, but over the years she put many of her demons to rest and, after a few encounters with certain individuals, her opinion of the people who butchered her planet changed over time. She started off angry at the universe and all others in it, but evolved into a major figure in the region, a role she matured into.

She was strong-willed, determined, feisty, and could kick ass whilst: a) wearing heels, b) with a d’k’tagh in her side, or c) heavily pregnant. She is the epitome of an excellently-written, superbly-acted tough but also vulnerable woman—future Trek series’ (as well as NuTrek films) should take note, Kira Nerys is how to portray a brilliant female character!

That is all.

As I just mentioned in another thread, my wife and I considered her a worthy character to partially name our daughter after (Nerys is her middle name) - and I have no higher compliment than that. :)

^Nice! My wife and I are considering Kira for our baby due in July. :) She liked DS9, and she likes that name. I was surprised. I also suggested Nerys for a middle name, but she didn't go for that one. Then she said, "What do you think about Kara?" And I got excited and said, "Kara Thrace! And we could nickname her Starbuck!" She just rolled her eyes at me and said "No. Just Kara."

EDIT: Love the other posts above! @JirinPanthosa, add "Second Skin" to those character growth episodes for Kira. I think I mentioned that in another thread recently, but worth mentioning here as well!

Lol! :techman: Congrats!

I have always been a big Kira fan. IMO, she is the character that develops the most in the series. That has always been one of the things I've liked about her. The one thing I didn't liked about the Kira development was her relationship with Odo. Sorry to all the Kira-Odo shippers!

...and a HOT cookie!

Well, that's also not REALLY Kira in the Fever clip, but I love Nana just as much as I love Kira! :)

Best character in Star Trek by far. On the page it's gold for any actor, but in the hands of Nana Visitor...wow. What an incredibly performance, and what incredible character development. Kira is pretty much a masterclass in how to create a well-rounded three-dimensional character, and I can't think of a single wrong note the writers or Nana made with her. Just awesome.

And Nana herself is even more awesome. :)

Kira is my favourite star trek character and one of my all time favourite tv characters. Nana Visitor gave such a wonderful strong performance and really brought the character to life but what really made me love the character so much was that Nana seemed to really enjoy playing the role and was always very passionate about the characters during interviews.

I was able to tell Nana that when i had the opportunity to meet her at a convention and she said she did really enjoy her time playing Kira and then remembered me at the next convention because she is awesome :)

I'm sorry, I don't LOVE Kira Nerys, I just like her. Ro Laren is the quintessential Bajoran, not Kira. It's like comparing Tuvok to Spock.

However, she is a pretty well-written character that plays a major role (pun intended) in canon, and I can't even consider anyone playing her better than Nana Visitor - angry-ness included.

Not to detract from any of her performances, but I enjoyed the weird love scenes with her and herself, as the Intendent in the MU. I'm a guy, I'd be lying if I didn't think that was awesome. She did a great job playing both parts.

Oh, I've shared that kind of stuff with her at conventions too. And seeing her face light up the next time I saw her and hearing a "Hello you!" was just so wonderful.

I like her so much I made a thingy, and she liked the thingy. :)

I love that the critical point of the Dominion War occurred in the war room between Kira, Odo, Garak, and the Female Changeling (no humans). Comparing that scene to those in the pilot, it's clear that the "angry woman" had been replaced by a personality with greater complexity.

I adore Kira! She might be my favorite DS9 character. She has so many layers and Nana played her perfectly.
