The Killing (AMC) Discussion

I'm gonna watch it when I get home. Had a ton of crap recording last night and my the consensus at my place was to continue watching that melodramatic The Kennedys. :shifty:

So, she was raped or was it sex play on the tape? Bizarro. And I knew something bad had befallen some female in the political candidate's life. He was visiting some sort of memorial with flowers in eppy one, but the weird camera angles blocked your view somewhat.

Anyone else watch tonight's episode 'El Diablo'?

It was good. It's hard to do much in the way of a review since this show is such a slow burn.

I disliked Sarah's partner slightly less than the previous episode where I hated him with the fire of a thousand suns. Hopefully by the end of season one I'll only mildly loathe him and not gleefully pray for his death.

I'll toss out my first way too premature prediction on the killer(s). It's the campaign manager lady who's sleeping with councilman Jordan Collier, and she's working for the incumbent mayor and using the high school kids as pawns. It was foreshadowed by the political strategist's comment before he left about how everyone plays both sides these days. She got the kids access to the campaign car, and sent the email from the political strategist's computer to get him out of the way because he wanted to fight the accusations against the councilman. The mayor was clearly informed of the goings on at the campaign and how to leverage that against Collier. I'm guessing Collier probably had an inappropriate relationship with the murdered girl or enough contact with her for there to be the appearance of something bad happening.

Anyone notice episode 3's bad sound mixing? Some barely audible dialogue, loud background noises, odd echos, etc.

I'm still with the show... but... man... there are some scenes that could move a wee bit faster... I get it, he doesn't want to get the newspaper... but we don't need to spend that much time...

I'm hoping things will start building up in tension, but the long looks or the long decision moments, I'm getting a little bored with.

Oh man you'd HATE the original version

Seriously? Wow. I do like that they haven't solved it in a single episode, I'm getting a little bored with the super cops on most TV shows solving everything within 24 hours, every week.

But, man... they could move things a little faster here. It's the long looks... that's what bugs me.

Let me put it like this: the thing I didn't like about the original is that they just took to damn long in the end to catch the killer. And that I felt mostly because of the pace, and the US version definitely has a quicker pace. If only for the simple fact that each episode is like 40 minutes whilst the original was at 55 minutes an episode.

When you said it took them so long, do you mean they (and the audience) knew who did it and THEN there was a lot of time to catch them OR do you mean it took a long time because things moved slowly, but finally in the last episode it was revealed and then they caught him/her and it was over...?

It looked like they were fucking her ass to me.

I really hope it's not one of the people running for mayor, that would be such a let down.

I'm really hoping for something bizarre and out there, but still makes sense. Kind of like Veronica Mars season 1.

I'm enjoying this so far. The only other cop show I watch is Justified (not sure if that's considered a cop show though). Definite echoes of Twin Peaks, obviously, but the grieving parents got to me in the first episode anyway.

I don't mind the slow burn at all - spending some time with characters that would have maybe a 30 second scene in a L&O/CSI show and seeing their lives a bit more is what makes this engaging for me.

Also, I kinda like the younger partner. He's annoying and thinks he has it all figured out, but I'd rather have someone like that to contrast with the lead detective. Plus I do think the gravity of the case is starting to sink in for him - there are moments when he is speechless and seems to be realizing (slowly) that he's out of his depths and needs to pay attention rather than jump to conclusions. Could be a very satisfying character arc in the end if they handle it well.

All in all, the only thing that really irritated me so far was the very beginning of the first episode where it seemed like they were showing flashes of the night of the murder. I guess I'd rather have gone in just as cold as the investigators and not have even the slightest hint of what went down that night until they do. But that's a minor complaint.

On a side note, every time I see Callum Keith Rennie I assume I'm watching something filmed in British Columbia. Not sure if that's an accurate assumption or not. Right before this I had watched Case 39, and the look of the area (supposedly Oregon) plus Callum's presence had me convinced it was in BC. But I didn't stick through the end credits to confirm it.

More of the latter. I suspected who it was when I gave on the show, and just tuned in for the last bit of the last episode to confirm. I was right.

I am. I had to wait until midnight because the Thunder game ran late.

I don't think it's the mayoral candidate at all. So what exactly is Rosie's father into? The mafia?

I am going to go on record as thinking the Mayor did it, or had it done, to sink the councilman's mayoral campaign. I am probably wrong, but just my gut feel right now.
