The Kelvin is a two nacelled ship.

How about this:

The Kelvin has one Warp Nacelle.

That's fine.

We just seem to be loosing the original meaning of nacelle, and with the hull configuration of the Kelvin in particular the problem is exacerbated.

How is anyone seeing the secondary/engineering hull as anything else?

Just so there is no confusion about this - the secondary hull is on top of the saucer - we all agree about that?

I don't thinking we're losing anything. According to this definition, we should have been saying that the Enterprise (all of them, minus the NX-01) has had 3 nacelles this whole time.

When we say "nacelle" in Star Trek, we're obviously referring to the "warp nacelles." I think it's silly to get wrapped up in the usage of a word that we've been using for 40 years.

Well we do have more that 4 months of time to kill.

Star Trek silly?! That's unpossible!

It's closer to 6, unfortunately.

The crazy threads in this forum really make me wish the movie was still coming out on Christmas! I can't handle this!

I have no ideal what that pic is that is presented above. At 1:45 in the trailer it shows the Kelvin NCC-0514.The nacelle there is clearly above the saucer.I tried to do a screen capture of that but failed.I'm sure somebody else can do it for sure.
The blue "eye-ball" looking thing in the structure above the saucer seen at 1:45 of the trailer is the deflector dish -- which is in the front end of the engineering hull.

For separately coiled ships, yes. For the E, the warp coils are obviously nacelles to the engineering hull. When speaking of the Kelvin, the original meaning becomes lost when we refer to the "secondary hull and the nacelle".

We can transmogrify the meaning of the word nacelle to mean only the separated warp coil housing and not any separate component part of the main craft. But to do so will remove the bolts of meaning that hold the original definition together.

I have no idea what any of that means - in the terms that the show has always used it - it has one [Warp] nacelle.

You guys think this might be a D7?

Our venerable old never-changing Klingon ship...

Considering I have only ever used the term "nacelle" in the context of Star Trek, and I doubt I'll have much reason to start using it elsewhere anytime soon, I'm okay with twisting the word's meaning a bit.

...and your point?

There have been several posts that address the Kelvin and describe her as having a nacelle and an engineering hull. This is not entirely correct. The Kelvin has two nacelles, one appears to house the engineering section and the other appears to house the warp coil.

Carry on.:techman:

Do you have any proof to back this statement up? Because all the pictures I see only feature one nacelle.

I would hope all the pictures feature one nacelle. Its not difficult to figure out that when a trekkie refers to a nacelle, he means WARP nacelle, not secondary hull or pod! Oh, and by the way, the registry has a zero in it because they wanted to! Go look at any checkbook that starts with a number lower than 1000. Theres always gonna be a zero at the front because eventually you'll get to check #1000!!!

All pictures feature on warp nacelle. The issue comes to bear in differing hull configurations. We are used to discussing hull configurations like the Connie that have *two nacelles which house the warp coils. If we use the original meaning of the word nacelle as an outboard housing for people, equipment, or engines, does making the Kelvin engine room outboard to the saucer section make the engineering section itself a nacelle?

This is really just an etymology question and the issues that are arising from the specialization of the word.

*Does is only have two? Or should we count the saucer section (the gondola of our interstellar balloon) as a nacelle?
